  1. I just did 4 pass CCE 2.5 with DVD Rebuilder which took like 12 hours !!!! & did DVD Shrink which only took 5 hours .

& the results were terrible, I would think 4 passes would be enough, afterall, i can do a 2 pass vbr in tmpgenc & at 1600 & have good quality !!

this video was 4hours long, I wanted to cram it onto 1 DVD.

DVD Shrink did just as good as the CCE !!!!!.

what am i doing wrong ?

If tmpgenc does it, just use tmpgenc. I would not try to cram 4 hours of full D1 onto a single 4.37GB DVD. I'd split it, or convert it to half-D1. Or just use tmpgenc if you are happy with the output.

Irregardless of the number of passes, IMO you're never going to get anywhere near decent quality using any encoder using roughly 2300kbps (got it from a bitrate calculator) for full D1 (720 X 480). However, change your frame size to half D1 (352 X 480) and I'm confident you'll find the results much more palatable. All things being equal, as good as DVDShrink is, a re-encode will always get my vote as a better option if we're strictly talking in a purist domain. In practice, I swear by DVDShrink for most jobs as I don't find the difference noticable to my eyes.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. I just started useing CCE this past week and it does take a long time, but my results have been fantastic. I do it overnight while I sleep and it only takes 5 hours or so for most of my DVD's. I still love DVDShrink and use it for movie only backups with little compression.

Oh, I only do 2 pass. Not sure 4 pass would would be worth the extra time from some of the posts that I have read.

I have yet to find an instance where more than 3 passes is warranted.

  6. I use CCE via DvdRB and use many passes. I always half d1 the extras (if i havent ripped them with vobblanker already) with maybe a 25% quality cut (depending on the extra).

The only reason that I use 10 (9 + 1 .vaf pass) total passes is that I set it up before I go to bed at night. I work days and don't get back to my comp until after I get off at around 5 pm. Almost always it's finished encoding and I have never had a quality issue that way. (anyone who says CCE diminishes quality after 4 or 5 passes is wrong...from doom9: geffroman - OK... Is there a scenario where an extra pass could degrade the final quality...? or is it just a matter of possibly no gain for all the extra time spent...?
wmansir - It will never hurt, just waste time.

The only times that the encode isn't complete is when doing episode discs. I don't do batch encodes (not enough HDD space ) otherwise I would set 5 passes for 2 encodes each. I guess.

10 passes?? whew, you do have some time to waste.
I'll bet you won't see a difference between a two pass and your ten pass.
If you do, please post so I can see it too.

You guys have a much larger budget for your video hobby (job) than I do to be able to afford CCE SP (two-grand). I specifically bought CCE Basic ($58 ) to use with DVD-Rebuilder, and since have started using it (over TMPGEnc-Plus) as my encoder of choice. CCE Basic VBR is limited to 2-passes.

I'm very please with the speed and quality I get from CCE Basic 2-pass VBR.

For backing up DVDs, I'll use DVD-Shrink if compression is 90% or better. Otherwise, I'll use DVD-RB w/CCE Basic (2-pass VBR).

To be honest, I really can't tell a difference between DVD-Shrink and DVD-RB w/CCE but It just makes me feel better using DVD-RB when compression falls below 90%.
