I know this is a newbie question, but Can you rip with CDRom or CDR drive or does it have to be done with a DVDRom?
Thanks

It needs to be done with a DVD ROM. But with the price of them dropping you should just buy one!
I only dream in black & white...

As an aside let me add that a lot of the 'cheap-o' DVD-ROMs rip better than a few name brand models. It seems that the HiVal (compusa) 12x/16x and pioneer 16x seem to be the best choice.
-
HiVal are actually Pioneer in most cases and for some strange reason more expensive then the Pioneer itself, but I would also highly recommand the Pioneer, I love this drive, especialy if you can get your hands on the Slot Drive version which also has a Digital Output.

What's the model # for the slot drive verison I can't find it? Also I assume the video out is macrovision protected?
-
The Slot versions are always with a 0
104, 105 and 106 (instead of 114,115 and 116)
No DVD has a Video Out interface, it's just a drive, you use either a software playback or hardware playback for Video, as for Audio, it has both Analog and Digital outputs.

if people so cheap they can't even afford the $40 for a DVD-ROM...don't think they should be ripping at all...
-
Didn't say I was to cheap, Just asked - doodoohead! Why spend the $40 if you don't need to wasteful rich boy.

Im still utterly confuse as to why this question keeps coming up...if a CDROM could read DVD media...what would have been the point of making a DVD-ROM drive???...Im lost as to how people can logically think that a CDROM could read a DVD.
-
poopyhead, it has nothing about being cheap, 40$ may sometimes be the cost of the DVD, but don't forget Delivery, and also it can be buying from another country, then taxes....
TJMac, DVD's are pretty cheap, and if you want to do ripping, you must have one, it is also better to rip then to do captures
Kdiddy, I think some people believe because the media is the same size and you can put it in the CD drive, then it will work

ripping wih a CD-Rom....and like poopyhead said prices are lowering i bought my Samsung DVD-Rom for $80
-
You guys gotta consider that for some people, the shipping cost could be way over 50% the price of the drive itself, sometimes even more, I know, cause I live in Israel, and shipping a DVD drive which only costs 60$, the delivery itself will be around 55$, so that ain't cheap.

Sefy, ya...but come on....
CD, CD-ROM, CD-RW
DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW
i think they name the drives for a certain reason....for the couple so months i've been browsing through this forum, i've heard this question come up sooooooo many times..i guess it's getting kinda old for me...
btw...thnx for all your help....NTSC movies look perfect now -
poopyhead, believe me I know, i don't even remember how many times i've seen this question, but some people, well, logic is not included
And if you were thanking me, well, you welcome, don't know what I did though
