Please can some one help me??? I have googled the system error code 5 that I am getting and there is total silence of the cause and solution or anyone else having this problem, for-that-matter, on the results I've read. I am trying to make a copy of a DVD-R that I burned the other day. When I tried to copy the DVD-R onto a blank DVD-R in Windows Vista (on my laptop) I received an error message saying that there was an error and the DVD could not burn. Needless to say I wasted 2 blank DVD-Rs by trying to burn it again but using the external HP DVD burner as the destination the second time around instead of using it as the source and drive/D as the destination as I did the first time. On vista the dvd burning software sucks, it is ULEAD DVD Movie Factory for Toshiba and it apperantly does not keep system logs of the errors that occur. Anyways, I decided to try copying the DVD with my XP by using MagicISO to convert or import the DVD to an iso.file and then I would use Nero to burn the iso file to a blank DVD-R.... BUT during the process of MagicISO importing the ISO from the CDROM/DVD I received an error that says:
"System Error. Code:5. Access is denied."
I have no idea what the problem is. I have tried researching to discover any knowledge of what may be causing the problem but there is abosutely nothing online that even sounds simular to my problem. I was going to email MagicISO support for help but I decided to try this forum first. Any advice or work arounds will be greatly appreciated. I may be doing something wrong... who knows? I just installed MagicISO today and so I am not familar with the program. But PLEASE some one help ME!!! This sucks!! THank you in advance.

If you are just making a copy of a DVD-5 to another DVD-5, you really don't need a ISO conversion with Magic ISO.. I would use DVD Decrypter, ISO READ>ISO WRITE.

Or if you have copied the VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive, just use ImgBurn in 'Build' mode to burn a copy.

I wouldn't recommend using any Windows based programs for copying a DVD, especially with Vista. ImgBurn or even DVD Decrypter work quite a bit better, IMO. I also wouldn't try copying DVD to DVD, on the fly, as that can sometime cause problems. If you can get it on your hard drive, it should be easy to duplicate.

    And welcome to our forums.

Copying disc to disc in Windows XP can't be done without extra sofware. The basic Adaptec engine for copying hd files is 'free.' with the OS. The lack of 'access' may be that you don't have that level of control over your dvd drive using Windows alone.

Copy the main dvd folder to your desktop and then get a program that supports burning udf format to a dvd-r. The movie folder is then burned to disc as a udf.

Also, if I remember correctly, MagicISO creates a proprietary iso format. Only it can read it's own work. If that is correct, you may not want to use it again. Burn at Once is free. https://www.videohelp.com/tools/burnatonce

Hello redwudz and thank you very much for your prompt response. The reason I was making an iso.file of the DVD I wanted to copy is because I figured something was wrong with the dvd. I figured this because I had successfuly copied part 1 of a 4 part series of dvds and I did it on vista with that Ulead program and the 1st dvd copied without any problems. But when I went to copy the 2nd dvd I started having problems. I tried to copy the 2nd dvd twice and both times failed and it wasted my blank dvds so I decided to go the MagicISO (on XP) approach because I didn't want to waste another blank dvd. I figured I make an image of the dvd through iso file and burn the iso file onto the blank dvd and then hopefully it would work. But then I had the error code 5 in MagicISO (whatever that meant-who knows?) but I tried to do it again and the second time it copied the dvd (from the cdrom) into an iso file successfully. I am now burning the iso file to a dvd so cool beans. Hopefully this works. Thanks for your advice... I will keep these things in mind next time. And I will post back rather my dvd burning is successfull or not.

I wanted to ask you if the progs. you mentioned (ImgBurn or even DVD Decrypter) are they for XP or Vista? Thanks again.

Hi dnix71, thank you for responding to my post. In my above post I explained that I was finally successfull at copying the dvd to iso file. MagicISO can burn udf but I wasn't sure that udf file will play on a dvd player. I do know that when you copy iso file to dvd, it will play in dvd player because it worked that way for me the other day. Hopefully this one does too... guess I will find out soon. The dvd is 80% done so I will let you know if it works. Thanks again for responding and I appreciate your advice.

Okay, this is wierd... after MagicISO completed burning the iso file to dvd...that system error code 5 popped up again. But the good news is that when the drive ejected the dvd I put it in the dvd player and it works!!! I don't know whats wrong with magiciso but at least it gave me what I wanted. If anyone knows what "System Error. Code:5. Access is denied." means and how come it's popping up please let me know. Thank you.

Okay, now when I clicked the 'X' to exit out of the 'system error code 5' alert, it popped up like 2 more times and then a new alert popped up saying the following:
"Access violation at address 0061A8E3 in module 'MagicISO.exe'. Read of address 00000030."
If anyone knows anything or can help fix this, please respond. Thanks.

Access violation could mean that a program is trying to write to a address that doesn't exist or a location that it doesn't have permission for. Or it may have been expecting something else at that address. Just guesses though.

Usually I would un-install and re-install the program. If this is in Vista, install it by R clicking the install program and chose 'Run as administrator'. (But I believe you said it was on XP)

ImgBurn and DVD Decrypter work fine with Vista. Here's a list of other Vista compatible programs: http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List

Putting a DVD or other info into a ISO just repackages it with the ISO 'wrapper'. True, it should make you an exact copy of the file when you burn it, but if the file is flawed, the copy will still be flawed.

It depends what's really wrong with the DVD, but I have had some luck running them through DVD Shrink and re-authoring them. That's if authoring is the problem.

This is where I usually ask what brand of DVD disc you are using? Many of us have found out the hard way that cheap DVD discs have high failure rates. Burning may not be your problem, it may be reading the disc you want to back up.

I was writing the disc to my external HD and there is plenty of space on there.

Owell, today I tried to do the same thing to the third dvd as I previously did with the second dvd but magiciso kept giving me those errors. So I took your advise, I downloaded DVD Decrypter.

Magiciso is on my desktop (XP). DVD Decrypter is on my laptop (Vista). DVD Decrypter works excellent. I had no problems at all with writing the iso file and burning it to dvd. The only problem I had is I should have used DVD Decrypter sooner!

Can I install DVD Decrypter on XP? I will replace MagicISO with it if I can.

I also wanted to ask your opion on the following:

1.) I use Windows Media Player on my laptop (Vista) and I HATE it!!! It always slows my system down and it takes forever ever to load. What media player would you recommend for me?

2.) On my desktop (XP) I cannot play dvds. I have realplayer and windows media player and they can't play the dvds. So I was going to download and install PowerDVD. I want to know what you think of this program or is there something else out there that is better. So before I install it, I will wait for your response.

Question: Does ImgBurn and DVD Decrypter do the same thing? Do I need both?

The brand of DVD discs I'm using is Maxell. I don't know if they are good DVD's... what brand do you use?

Thank you for all of your help....waiting for your reply...

VLC plays dvds well and is free. It also plays almost anything, including corrupt files. If time markers are messed up in an avi because of a corrupt file, VLC will usually offer to fix it by patching around the gap.

The error you get is all over Google. It's about user access control. Turn it off and the errors will go away. It's equivalent to a permission error in Linux/Mac OS X

    From this forum: http://www.quickbooksgroup.com/webx/forums/pointsale/1206

Start ->Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety ->User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control on or off - this one is better

I turned OFF User Account Control (UAC) to make "System Error. Code:5" message disappear. After I switched User Account Control back to ON position "System Error. Code:5" message was gone.

Thank you for finding that on google. OOoopps, I passed that link up on google because I thought it had something to do with something else. But I attempted to Turn User Account Control on or off but I don't have that option when I go to User Accounts. I am on XP Pro SP2.

UAC is mainly a Vista program. I don't know of any equivalent in XP. I use VLC also, mainly because it will play just about any format without having to add system codecs. But I've went with K-M player of late. It will play DVDs and most other formats. Seems to be a good substitute for WMP. It also works well wit Vista. I don't use WMP for anything, but that's a personal choice.

Windows doesn't come with a MPEG-2 codec, required for DVD playback. Vista Home premium and other version do have the codec. But you can add the codec or add a player that includes the codec with any OS. Power DVD is one that does add it. But so do others.

DVD Decrypter does a lot more than just do a simple copy. You may not often use the other functions, but they are there. ImgBurn is just a burner and nothing more. But it's does very well at that. I would keep Decrypter and ImgBurn both. Decrypter or ImgBurn can both burn ISOs. But ImgBurn can also burn VIDEO_TS folders directly, without having to use a ISO file.

MagicISO is an OK program, but if you don't need to use a ISO, other programs will do similar.

For most DVDs, I use Taiyo Yuden or sometimes Verbatim. I don't know about Maxell. You would need to check our 'DVD Media' page to the left and see how to find the manufacturers code and to see how that media rates. One thing is the best DVD media only cost a few more pennies than the cheap media, so saving money is not always a good choice.

Thank you for answering me. I will keep DVD Decrypter and will download ImgBurn. I have a question that I can't find a for sure answer to from reading threads on the internet because everyone has a different answer and I just want to know the route to take that will give me what I want....

Okay, I downloaded a movie from the internet. The movie folder I downloaded has bin. and cue. file. I want to burn this movie onto a dvd-r so I can view the movie on my stand alone dvd player. I tried 3 peoples instructions from threads and I have waisted 1 dvd and 2 cds because my dvd player didn't recognize dvd or cd... it said disk error. If anyone can help me so that I can get this movie convert to dvd formats because I believe they are vcd formats.... and get the movie on dvd so I can watch on tv with dvd player. Thank you.

If it's a VCD inside the BIN, I would just burn that to CD as is. Every time you re-encode you will have loss of quality. Yes, you can convert a VCD video to a DVD disc. All you really need to do is convert the VCD 44.1Khz audio to the regular 48Khz DVD audio. The video should already be DVD compliant.

Extract the VCD from the BIN file with ISOBuster or similar. Then you will probably have a standard VCD. You can then take out the AVSEQnn.DAT and rename it to AVSEQnn.mpg, then convert that to DVD by changing the audio. Or drop it into TDA as is and it will convert the audio automatically. But you will have a 4.37GB DVD with only .7GB used.

The reason you may be getting several methods for conversion is because you can do it several ways. TDA is one of the fastest and easiest, IMO, as long as you don't mind wasting DVD space. The quality won't improve anyway with re-encoding.

If the contents of the BIN is another format, such as Xvid, extract it as before, then you will need to re-encode the video and audio for the DVD format. ConvertX is one of the easiest in this case, JMO.
