  1. I've searched and searched for the solution to this problem but unfortuntly there doesn't seem to be a post with the answers...

I have a couple of xvids that I wish to convert to DVD. I have been sucessfull with loads of xvids b4, but these two are causing me to pull my hair out. I'll try to be as consise as I can!

They are both xvids with mp3 audio
    They are both 23.976 FPS
Both play perfectly in Windows media Player 10
They are both under 700 mb

I want them to play in a stand-alone PAL Dvd player

Every time I use TMPGEnc to encode them to Mpeg the resulting picture is always jerky or stuttery. The sound is great BTW. It's pretty noticable on my pc's DVD player and looks worse on my standalone DVD/TV. I have improved it slightly by doing the following:

1: Getting rid of all my codecs on my machine ( by reinstalling Windows ) and using GSpot to tell me which ones I need and when I need them. (Codec Packs are bad for you and your pc - trust me)

2: In TMPGEnc selecting a) Constant Bit Rate - I've heard that VBR can sometimes result in a jerky picture. b) Motion Estimate Search as High Quality (very slow) c)Advanced / Video Arrange Method - Full screen(keep aspect ratio) d) checking - Do not frame rate conversion e) I bring the file size to 96% of the disk's capacity.

2b: Also, I've selected Options / Environmental Settings / VFAPI Plug-in / And brought Direct Show to the top of the list (gave it a value of 2)

3: The resulting mpeg I play on Cyberlink Power DVD 6, it's still a little jerky and not up to what I would call watchable..

4: I use Besweet to resolve the audio sync problem ( Speeding up the audio by about 4% - it works fine ).

5: I have authored one attempt using TMPGEnc Author, but the result was just as bad, so i'm pretty sure it's not my pc.

I have encoded xvids that are over 700 mb's b4 but I can't remember if I did the same with xvids that are under 700 mb !! I kinda like TMPGEnc so would love if someone could point me in the direction of a guide that resolves this problem using TMPEGEnc -VirtualDubMod - BeSweet etc. I would prefer not to have to install any more software allthough I am up to suggestions - dvdSanta, DVD2SVCD etc, if you a pretty sure that they will solve my problem.

    Thanks Guys

    P.S.
I've also tried numerous combinations of numbers 2 and 2b above, but I found that what I have included above gets the best result....

Do you keep them at 23.976, or up the framerate to 29.976 ? Altering framerate can do this.

Woops - missed that bit. I'd keep them as NTSC, as there is a very high likelihood that your player will handle them anyway. Format conversion is not an easy thing to get good results with using software. If you don't need to do it, don't put yourself through the pain.

  5. Thanks for replying guys,

I did leave it as ntsc and encode it but infortunatly got the same result !!

It's still quite jerky, i think i'll try tmpgenc 3.0 and see if i can make any had way that way..
    Any other ideas ?
Both movies play great as .avi's on Windows Media Player 10, i just can't understand it.

    Thanks again[/quote]

You mentioned you had a PAL DVD player...??
Most DVD players will play PAL or NTSC for their region.
I have region 4 DVDs which are both NTSC and PAL discs ...
they play fine on my Philips 736K.

Hopefully you have a TV which will play both PAL and NTSC??

I use CCE 2.67 to encode Xvids to MPG video for DVD...
this is 23..976 frame rate ...cause the Xvids are progressive I think

So I always use pulldown.exe to convert to 29.976 frame rate

This may help with the jerkiness...unless TMPGenc does this already??

I have lotss of success with DVD Lab pro for authoring DVDs
this program when it authors also does a little compensation for
    NTSC jerkiness..

  7. TMPGEnc 3.0 did nothing for it and i tried every combination of filters, interlacing / deinterlacing, 2;3 pulldown and inverse etc.......i did everything. Nothing worked, the best settings i found are:

    Leaving it as NTSC
    Inverse 3:2 puldown
    Motion Search precision: Highest

I seen alot of posts regarding the very same problem that I am having but no one seems to have a conclusive answer..I wonder if there is a common denomiator with the file or software that is causing this problem to occur..... Any suggestionss would be great. I'll keep experimenting.

FYI, Here's a copy of the gspot i did on one of the files:
