Your hard drive is most likely formatted with the FAT32 file system. FAT32 does not support files larger than 4GB. Windows XP and Windows 2000 have the capability of using the NTFS filesystem, which does support files over 4GB in size. Windows 95/98/ME do not support NTFS.

If you are using 2K or XP, you could convert your drive to NTFS, however, I would advise a full backup before attempting this. To convert, you would have to use the command prompt (I'm not familiar with the method, sorry), alternatively you could use a program like Partition Magic.

***Once again, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND a full backup before attempting to convert to NTFS.***

Type this in from the command prompt.

    CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS

It will ask for that name in confirmation. Then it will ask two further questions. Reply Y each time to set up conversion to happen at the next boot, then restart the machine. (If you are converting a partition other than the operating system’s partition, you may find that it runs without rebooting.) After returning to Win XP, the hard disk will work for two or three minutes, tidying up. Leave things alone during this time.
You do not need to backup. Everything will be fine.

ME does not (as far as I know) support NTFS.

I am not familiar with Media Center Edition, but I would have to guess it supports NTFS. If you do switch, a fresh install would be best.

If your data files (video, spreadsheet, etc. on say E:\) are on another partion, you will have to either delete them (wipe out any data) and recreate them, or convert them (keeping data in tact) once windows is installed.

That is for you to decide. I tried media center 2004 and did not care for it.

I really don't use my pc to record tv programs. I removed my tv tuner card from my pc because my television is not more than 10 feet away. The main thing is it's designed to replace your television and other components.

It is meant to be the centerpiece of the living room. You may like it. I am not really heavily into convergence.
