Due to wormintheapple.gr imploding, MacTheRipper is now hosted at the following site:
    http://www.ripdifferent.com/mtr/
I'd like to thank the kind folks at RipDifferent for allowing us to continue sharing MTR with Mac users everywhere. The only remaining problem is hosting the actual download of MTR. Our last release got upwards of 50,000 downloads (probably closer to if not higher than 70,000), and at 1 MB a piece, accounts for a pretty significant chunk of bandwidth. Right now, I'm hosting it on my iDisk. We'd like to get a couple more mirrors up to help spread the load. If any of you would like to join our distribution team by dedicating a bit of space and a lot of bandwidth on your iDisks, Spymac discs, or any other http-accessible high speed host, that would help us out a lot, so that we are able to survive a good bashing from VT and MU. You can let us know at our new contact address at mtr@ripdifferent.com.

Why not set up a .torrent for the intial release of each update? I'm guessing that most your download bandwith takes place in the first week after an update -- a .torrent would offload that to your loyal fans and users. Have the regular download available after a week for stragglers.

This way people who want the uploads quickly can feel good about helping you out by not consuming your bandwidth.

I've never had a torrent NOT complete, unless it was some really obscure file that was years old and no one but me was interested. That is NOT going to be the case when you release a new version of MTR, especially for the first few days.

And besides -- it's no skin off your nose. Put the torrent up for a week, let the large percentage of your users who LIKE torrents download the file at no bandwidth cost to you, then you can post the file on a regular site for people who don't like or do torrents.

You save 95% on bandwith costs -- which you said was important to you -- and everyone is happy. Tough to do better than that.

The kind folks at a site that shall remain anonymous usually are thoughtful enough to set up a torrent for us. That should not be a problem for those that know where to look. My problem is that I don't have enough bandwidth to seed them. Regardless, I've already gotten a few offers to help mirror our releases, so we should be able to withstand the VT and MU onslaught. If anyone knows how to randomize download mirror selections via php, that would be very helpful. Also, if one or two more people had an iDisk or Spymac disk they were willing to let us use for this, that would be great as well.
