  1. Hi,

    Does anybody know if any current DVD-recorder has a feature to digitize audio from an analog source such as RCA AUDIO IN ( Left and Right ) interface w/o taking up DVD diskspace for the non exisitng RCA VIDEO IN ?

    It seems to me there will be lots of wasted disk space if you just want to digitize some audio (and NO video) but the DVD recorder still tries to digitize your blank video on put it on the disk at the same time as the AUDIO is being digitized .

    I hope that any current DVD recorder is smart enough NOT to do that but I don't want to own one yet until most critical DVD recording issues are resolved .

    Well I don't know if this answers your question but I just got the LiteON LVW-5045 DVD Recorder and it also records CD-R and -RW. SO far I have had a good experience with my LVW-5045. When I was researching recorders I could not find anyone that spec for recording DVD audio recording. I would have thought that Pioneer but I didn't see it.

    I've never heard of a DVD recorder that can be set to audio only. Since you don't care about the video you could set the recorder to the maximum amount of time, about 8 hours. The audio should be the same quality whether it's 2 hours or 8.

    TEXAVERY;

    A few of the LiteOn models will record to Audio CD, but I don't really see the need for this. DVD Audio is arguably better since it's at a higher sample-rate (48kHz instead of CD's 44.1kHz). I would assume you would want to edit your sound recordings on a PC and there are many programs (some free) that will rip the audio from a DVD recording. There are also free programs that will down-sample from 48 to 44.1 if you want to make Audio CD's from your recordings. My advice would be to ignore the "wasted video space", it's not important.

    I've done this with my Pioneer DVR. If you don't connect a video input it records only the audio. I can get nearly 7 hours of PCM audio on one DVD-RW. Here is the link to where I described this previously on this forum:

  6. Actually , digitizing audio to a CD or to a DVD disk are both good enough .

    The point I was trying to make is: if you can record Video AND Audio for about 6 hours(I guess in low video resolution mode) on a single 4.7G DVD disk , then recording just Audio (and NO Video) will be at least 10x times more :

    5min of MPEG2 lowres video+audio is about 50MB n a 4.7GB disk, it's about 8hours of digital audio/video.(this is consistent w/ what some of you have reported) 8hoursx60min/5min=96 digital audio songs

    5min of MP3 audio only is about 5MBn a 4.7GB disk :it's about 900 MP3 audio songs.

    So there is some significant overhead and so when comes the time to manage your collection of music , i'd rather have to manage only 1 disk instead of 10 separate disks.
