I just got a "sense key = medium error" trying to burn with Memorex 8x discs. I've had great luck with the 4x Memorex, but I've made four coasters trying to get the 8x discs to work. Other posts in this forum imply that this is probably due to bad media or the burner crapping out. I've successfully burned just a few days ago (4x dvd's), and I was just able to burn onto a dvd-rw (I'm out of 4x discs), so I'm guessing it's the latter. Has anybody had success/failures with the 8x memorex?

I'm on a 1ghz imac (dvr-105 burner) with OSX 10.3.8. Does this burner have problems with 8x discs? Could it be that I need a firmware upgrade? I know that there is some non-apple firmware floating around. Anyone have any experience with those? Any help would be appreciated.

Unless i am HORRIBLY mistaken, the DVR-105 is a 4x drive. To get above that you would have to :flash: it and that is always a risk

i would imagine they would work when burning 4x however. What brand are they?

The DVR-105 is a 4x drive. I assumed that it would burn the 8x media but at the 4x speed. Is that wrong? It seems like the 4x media on the store shelves is quickly being replaced by the 8x dvd's, so maybe I need to try flashing my drive. Is it really that risky?

Mostly flashing requires access to a PC. If you have it i would give it a try, but my motto is just get something better. Most drives that are set to a max have trouble with disks above and beyond thier "normal" range, and will usually only burn those faster disks really slow. 1x for example when you use a 8x disk in a 4x drive.

Most new drives you can get for REALLY cheap, plus the DVR-109 boasts a 16x burn with 6x DL support for under $80!

I have the DCVR-108 which is also an amazing price and mine burns at 12x dvd-/+r with no problems.
