  1. Panasonic has announced several new models at CES that will be available in April and May. They will now be able to capture in DVD-Video format to DVD-RW, have higher resolution LP recording mode, and a new 12-bit A/D converter. Good news for all you Panny fans!

There will be some really cool new features in some of these units, including improved hard drive editing and disc transfer capabilities.... and HDMI digital video/audio output for displays and receivers that have it.

Looks like the Pannies still won't play SVCDs. I wonder why...

It also looks like the Japanese units with really large HDDs from many manufacturers will not be crossing the ocean. Toshiba announced a 400 Gig model in Japan but the one from the CES is only 160. I want that 400 Gig model, not the 160! Ditto with Sony. Ditto with Panasonic. What's going on here??

I shudder at the thought of the bitrate allocation.
I wonder what the specs are.
Panasonics already look like crap at this setting.

What he said. That confused me muchly. Shouldn't they be DROPPING the resolution?

  5. Their press release didn't go into any detail about this new higher res LP mode, but it mentioned the 12-bit D/A conversion produces superior clarity... maybe it has something to do with that, or some other pre-encoding processing they have added.

I smell marketing BS, but we shall see.
Sort of like "built in TBC" ... yeah, like that did much.

  7. The Panasonic new models are skimpy on the HD.. they should introduce models that exceed 160GiG's on the HD

The E500 has a 400 Gig drive but I guess until they get their Hi-Def recorders out we won't see too many really large HDD models on these shores...
