Need DVD-RAM support? Go for the LG.
Need bitsetting capability? Go for the NEC (you will need a firmware patch).

  3. I believe (not 100% sure on this) that you can "flash down" the 4160 to the 4120. You lose the 16x speed for the 12x, but you get bitsetting support.

  4. From what I have read, you cannot Flash down to the 4120.

The LG 4160 burner sets DL disks by default to DVD-ROM. So not having a bitsetting option is probably not that big a deal. However, bitsetting can be useful for DVD+RW disks. But mots people use DVD+R for burning DVD-Video. Bitsetting DVD+R disks is possible but rarely necessary.

The newer LG 4163 model allows bitsetting.

Bitsetting of everything (I mean +R and +RW), or only of DL disks?

  9. Well i know the 4120 can be "flashed up." I just didn't know the difference between the 4160 and the 4163...

  10. NEC, I tried the 4120B, the discs skip on some players. The first LG lasted 16 discs before it died. I use the NEC 3500 every day, perfect burns every time.

  11. I've had 2 LG's (the 4040 and the 4120) and both worked (still works) very well

  12. I trade discs with other people, so they were played on many different players, some had problems with LG discs, none have ever had a problem with NEC discs.
