Can someone please explain what the "overlay mode" setting is (in TMPGEnc and other video software)?
Why would I want to (or not want to) turn on this setting?
Thanks!

Yo!
I could be completely wrong here but.....
I THINK this is to do with the way Tmpgenc renders (draws / paints / displays / whatever) the movie whilst encoding / viewing / whatever.
Using overlay mode enables(??) the hardware in your graphcis card to render the image and thus speed things up a bit.
I THINK!
Andy.

I concur. The screen is built from two inputs. The first is the overall picture such as the desktop or wahatever you have showing. The movie is overlaid on top of that so that as the movie progresses all that is changed is the picture of the film so avoiding having to rewrite the entire screen. This of course reduces dramatically the amount of processing that has to take place and speeds up whatever else has to run.I THINK this is to do with the way Tmpgenc renders (draws / paints / displays / whatever) the movie whilst encoding / viewing / whatever.
