Sup all,
I had a super quick question to ask. I just picked up a 30-pack of Maxwell 8X dvd+r media @ my local Wal-Mart, and I found out it was RITEK G05 media.
How is this media? I own a external Lacie USB2.0 burner, which has a Lite-on 812S burner.
I tried to burn at 8X speeds, but they seem to only get up to 5x top's and then fluxuate between 2-6x sppeds, not really steed speed while burning. I have yet to see any of the 10 dvd-rs get the 8X speeds. can there be something wrong? or is G05's not that great of media?? Thanks

G05s are fairly consistent good quality media. I am not sure if your 812S will like it but it will do as well as most other -R media and better than some. I would guess that your drive could use a firmware upgrade or possibly you are limited to a slower speed because of the USB speed. If you are really getting 5X then it is access time because it is external.

Chas,
Thanks, I am maybe considering a firmware update. How can I check which firmware I got?
May I ask you where I can go to get the best update there is?
Thanks if you or anyone can help me out.*New Mac user*, been PC user 4 life -
Nevermind. I just updated my firmware to US0Q. I tried agin to burn another dvd-r 8x and still kept droping around 1-6x speeds. maybe twice it burpt to 7x. I feel that this media on my lite-on is like a bankrupt stock-market report. DOH!!

regal,
I do not know if this may help you but where I buy my G05, they have added the following statement for G05s: "May not be compatible with Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-832S". Maybe it's the same compatibility problem with the 812? Just guessing -
Maybe I am the only one, but I do not consider a burn in an external drive that only reaches 7X on an 8X disc to be a failure. If you were to actually see the burn speeds you would see it starts slowly and gradually steps up to the maximum at the edge of the disc. I think your equipment is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.
As to RickTheRed's comments; that is very interesting. I might just throw a G05 on my 812S for the next burn and see what happens as I am using the 832 firmware. I would guess that they are referring to burn quality but such a harsh statement would almost have to come from a large block of customers with massive burn failure. I would love to find out the history behind the warning.Still a few bugs in the system...
