I have recently purchased a 16x dual double layer model EMPREX and have installed the instant cd pinnacle software which should burn in the same fashion as nero or any other software but it doesn't with nero it the response is as follows " You have added DVD video content that will NOT result in a DVD video compliant disc" To create discs playable in DVD standalone players please use the DVD compilation type". Well I generally use DVD+rw for my movies but I got this drive in order to burn with DVD-RW/R too, but in fact it's corrupted 3 brand new DVD-RW discs. Just as well they were quite cheap, but they do work cos I use them with my dvd recorder. The first corrupted whilst trying to format it with roxio the second I formatted in DVD mode using my DVD recorder and whilst burning it it failed on all 3 occasions. Any suggestions what I could do now. I'm on my 4 attempt now using a dvd-r disc but still have had no joy as I get that message with Nero. Do DVD-RW have to formatted in some special sort of way before burning them Any suggestions. Awaiting your positive responses. Thanks Clive

You should update your firmware, and look for an updated version of Nero.

EDIT: See bugster in there now too. Just so there's no confusion, I'm not disagreeing with him either -
Yes nero is on the same system. They are VIDEO TS folders that I draga and drop as data files. The strange thing is I don't have this problem with DVD+rw/r only with DVD-RW & this new drive I've installed, which is both +/- the lot. It reads o.k. but it just corrupts my discs when it comes to writing. I really don't think it will make any difference if I uninstall Nero I've tried burning it through tmpgenc and it still hasn't made a difference. However, if when I do uninstall nero there will be nothing to update. Have any of you got instant pinnacle? I must admit the driver was fairly cheap for what it's supposed to do £70.00 so I guess I got what I paid for
. Any new ideas most welcome thanks for getting back to me.

I have burned loads of dvds in the past with or without the guide but using my old dvd+ internal combo drive with no problems. What am I doing? Firstly formatting the disc, I am converting the avi file to mpeg2 with all codecs downloaded, once encoded by tmpgenc, authoring it using tmpgenc plus and then trying to burn it. What happens is it burns up to around 80% before failing destroying the disc. The record says Medium error? I've used the emprex pinnacle software, nero, tmpgenc author all to burn, however to no avail. All I can conclude is the hardware which I presume is meant by Medium is faulty and should be returned to the shop.

TMPGENC PLUS is an encoder. It does not author.
If you want to give up, that's your decision, but it's probably not the fault of the hardware or sofware. I still think you've made some mistakes along the way. You need to step by step, click by click, tell us what you did. Not a generality in one sentence.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Well I meant tmpgenc author Mr smurf which as I reiterate have had little problem using in the past. The end result is that I am getting Medium error and my discs destroyed. Any idea what could bring that on apart from a faulty drive. I said what I did in my last post. I have an avi file which I wanted to develop into a dvd movie, so 1. I encoded it to mpeg2 using tmpgenc 2. I authored it using tmpgenc author, 3 I tried burning it using tmpgenc author when that didn't work I turned to nero. I've said all this before but anyway the error message is after 80% burning using DVD-RW smartbuy is Medium Error. I don't know what more I can add. I can do this fine with DVD+RW could there be some kind of difference between DVD+/- when it comes to burning? or producing them? If anyone knows let me know thanks and Have a Merry Christmas

If your dosks are -RW, burning errors should not destroy them, just erase and use again.
Burning errors are usually caused by one of the following.
1) Dodgy/non compliant burning software
2) Bad quality media
3) Media-burner incompatibility
4) Burning faster than the media is rated for.
5) Bad quality media
6) PC unable to supply data fast enough to keep burner busy.
Yes, I know I said 'Bad Quality Media' twice. Thats because it is the most likley culprit by far.
I ahve seen the Emprex for sale in PC World for £39.99. When you pay that little for a DVD burner, don't be surprised when it is a POS. If PC world can sell it for so little, then the word 'cheap' doesn't come close to describing its quality. -
What is the drive? EMPREX is just a brand name, and much like Cendyne was, just resells others' drives.

Like I said earlier, look for a firmware update.

yea, i got mine for 49.99 this is my 2nd 16x DL drive and my 4th dvd burner
all still work and all still get used
havent mad my new system yet for this puppy, will in the next day or 2, just gotta get case and vid card and will let u know -
Well finally I got a result not quite sure how. I don't understand much about master and slave but I got a m8 to install my writers again even though now I don't think that that was the reason I couldn't burn. I found a site advising me to update nero and select dvd-video from nero burning rom which I did and then add the vob files and yes after much heartache it was a success. I still can't get it to work with the incd pinnacle software. The website was for those interested was as follows: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/burning_dvd_with_nero.cfm. As I can't use the software I could only burn at 8x & not 16 x speed. But anyway at least it's something. But yeah do that koolaidwa let me know how you get on, would luv to hear about it. Have a happy new year folks!

yup, gotta say this drive at half to bad for 49.99
its now in my file server -
oh you lucky thing I paid £60 for mine and the software with it for burning doesn't work. when I burn audio it doesn't matter how many tracks I put on I get the reply that say something like you only have i.e. 17 mins not enough to burn when I know the disc is empty
Perhaps its cos I've got a combo drive as well. I have to see if it copies ok.

The sofware I'm using is Pinnacle Instant CD 8. I just can't get it to do anything. Will nero burn at 16x? I haven't been able to copy either. The source is a dvd-rw and the destination is dvd+rw, that should't make any difference in terms of copying should it?
