    hello

having spent a fair bit of time learning how capture vhs on to avi, encode them using tmpg and then author dvd via same software (lengthy but rewarding process!) - DVD recorders have now come on board..

    1. I'm curous as to the key differences in the final output

    2. Can I edit a dvd that's produced either way using say final cut?

One thing that i have noticed is that with tmpg dvd authoring software, it allows you to type in chapter details etc - it's easy. With my pioneer dvd 520H dvd recorder though, it's got to done painstakingly using buttons on remote control rather like texting on a mobile.. Is there a dvd recorder out there that could inteface to a keyboard?

    All thoughts appreciated!

  2. I have done both. I own the panny E30. I'll probably never willingly do a capture again. The quality of the recorders are much better than software captures with cards.

There are a number of people that will disagree and I havent tried every card, every hardware encoder, etc., but for time and everything else, using a dvdrecorder and the TMPGENC DVD Author is the way to go.

I have a DVD recorder on the way. I am thinking I can record the DVD (from Vhs), copy the DVD to the hard drive and then use TMPGEnc_DVD_Author to create chapters and cut/edit without having to reencode. Re author the DVD and burn the finished disk.

How are you using the DVDR and software?

Leoslocks, that should work. Note however, that if you use Nero, you might run into annoying problems... I once had a DVD recorder (a pioneer) and when importing the VOBs into nero, they would be cut into 30s chunks (because the DVD recorder records in 30s cells, which nero mis-interpreted as new chapters). After authoring, playback was not continuous over these 30s chunks, so I'd get a small studder every 30s! Bummer! I had to demux/remux to get rid of the problem. I returned the recoder...

But I don't know whether TMPGenc DVD Author would have the same problem.

thanks - to be honest - im not that familiar with the technology but esentially on the dvd recorder, im creating a 'dvd-video' disc. i haven't tried to place it on pc yet - not sure how

perhaps i should try your suggestion of placing a disc onto pc hard drive but i have got nero too so we'll so how it goes..
