DVD Shrink Problems! Artifacts!

I just went over to a buddies house tonight to help him out with his first computer. Installing hardware, windows and a good amount of applications.

His main goal is to start burning dvds like there is no tomorrow. But I ran into a few problems that I have never seen before with dvd shrink.

first off, in order to rip a dvd with shrink, we could only use his dvd r/w drive to do so. the dvd rom drive would get encryption errors and not even budge.

so we ran the dvd past dvd decrypter. Then encoded it in shrink and used shrink to burn the dvd with nero. All of which are the latest versions.

So I pop the dvd into two of his dvd players and within mins or so, i start to see artifacts. BIG TIME. I then pop the dvd into his computer with power dvd 5 and the application just locks up.

So I then decrypt, encode and burn a different dvd movie with dvd shrink, bypassing dvd decrypter. I do this with his dvdrw drive.

I then put it in his dvd players and get the same freakin shiznit.

with an extra 512mb ddr and a geforce ddr 32mb.

His dvd rom drive is a ASUS DVD-E616P2.

And the media that we used was some 8x maxell DVD-R crap.



If anyone has any ideas about what to do now, let me know. I will try burning a few more dvds tomorrow on his comp using ritech ridata this time. Hopefully all goes well and its just a problem with the media. If not it will be fun tracking down the problem if no one else has yet experienced this specific problem.

It shouldn't matter which drive you use, but you will have to use something like DVD Decrypter or the latest version of DVD Shrink to break the CSS encryption. Shrink in not quite as good as Decrypter, so it is not unusual to find you need both.

When you say 'artifacts', what exactly do you mean ?

If you mean colour blocking, pulsing etc then it could be Shrink. If you mean broken picture type artifacts, it is the burn.

Did you use Deep Analysis and AEC settings in DVD Shrink ? I always use these if Shrink is doing any compressing - it makes a huge difference to output. Also, try burning with DVD Decrypter from Shrink - I find it to be a better burner than Nero for DVD Video files.

The artifacts looks like the artifacts that you get in games when you have your video card overclocked way too much.

They where blocky and colored red, green, blue and so on.

I will try your suggestion btw. But as far as the options menu goes in decrypter and shrink... how do you config them?

Sounds more like the media was burned poorly,use better quality media.

you either compressed too much, or bad media

I've used DVD Shrink with a 500 Mhz computer and have not had the problems you describe. Are you running other software at the same time? Don't use the computer while it is encoding and burning. Try turning off anti-virus software. Try using deep analysis. Using different media may help.

And if it is a fully packed - dual layer original DVD and you are keeping everything....NOT a good thing.

kfc, Shrink will produce artifacts if you compress too heavily. I love the proggy but will only use it if the compression is less then 20% "80%" in DVD Shrink. When you need more compression other proggy's suit that need better IMHO. What movie or movies did you do and did you keep everything including additional audio tracks?

DVD-9 is a single sided dual layer DVD which can fit up to 8.5 GB or 7.95 computer GB which many commercial video DVDs are using today.

DVD-5 is a single sided single layer DVD that stores up to about 4.7 GB.

8.5 pounds of dirt in a 4.7 pound hole - ain't gonna make it and sure as hell ain't gonna look pretty. You can either invest in a DL Burner and the expensive DL media or....buy two original DVD's and store one away somewhere. This is the hand we are dealt.

I could have done an exact copy of the dvd and it would have fit onto the dvd, it looked like i had a good 10% left on the dvd after i burned it. compression was 100%.

Was this the latest version of IC8, or IC8CD/DVD?

My big suggestion is changing a different DVD burner. The $59.00 Emperex dual layer burner( or BTC burner) from Fry are crappy burner. I bought one and returned it (both Emperex and BTC). Good luck.
