I've got 7 small MPG files I want to convert to a "single" AVI file. Is there a way, using VirtualDub MPEG-2 or VirtualDubMOD to merge them at the time of conversion to AVI ... or must I convert them individually to AVI files and merge afterward? I'd prefer not merging them with TMPGenc into one MPEG file prior to conversion to AVI. Thanks.

You should just be able to use the Append function to add extra clips in, so long as all files have the same properties - frame size, fps, etc etc.If in doubt, Google it.
