  1. OK, I've seen folks corrected 100 times here for saying "rendering" when they should use "encoding". I get THAT. Here's what is confusing me. I was fiddling around with the Ulead 5 that came with my DVD burner, adding some AVI files to the timeline after I cut them up a bit. Then I try to view (play) the timeline and it goes into a process it calls "rendering" that takes as long as the video (about - it was only a 20 sec video for learning the software). It only plays after this "rendering" process.

What is it actually doing? I hope it's just putting the new compilation together because I certainly don't want it encoding anything at this step - or ever for that matter as I plan to use TMPGenc Plus for that.

So, what is "Rendering" and do some software packages use that term for "encoding"?

    Possibly.
But, technically, any effects you add, is rendering.
When you create computer graphics, you render.

Encoding a new video stream ... is encoding.

Ulead VS5 ??? Adding effects? Rendering probably a correct use of the term.

In some cases, where both happen, "rendering/encoding" would be more appropriate than just one.

It sounds like it's encoding it according to what template you're using in the "preferences" settings. It will encode as an automatic step when you try to view it. It's trying to give you a preview that's representative of the finished product. It doesn't actually generate any new files until you save it as an MPEG.

If you're referring to Ulead Video Studio 5, that is years old and you should ditch it immediately. Ulead is the company name and they make many different video apps. If it's not VS, then disregard.
