  1. Hey I just got an LG GDR-8163 Dvd-rom because my dvd burner was limited to ripping @ around 1.5x... and I installed it and updated to firmware from the lg website and everything. It only rips at around 1.9x using dvd decryptor, I did the DVDinfo speed test and it only averages around 1.7x and clone dvd is even slower (though I don't have an actual speed from that proggy). I've been looking around and I found a post:

about enabling dma and uninstalling my ide drives and stuff. What I'm worried about is uninstalling my ide drives- will this erase my hdds?? I would imagine that you would post some sort of warning about that if that was true... My primary is set at ultra dma 5 and my secondary is listed at 'dma if available', but stays at PIO mode under 'current mode'. I was wondering if uninstalling the ide drives would erase my hdds or would they be safe?

I did the registry hack thing and that didn't seem to do anything regarding the secondary ide... both drives stayed the same, udma 5 and PIO respectively. Any advice? Would obtaining a hack firmware from rcp1.org be of any use? Or should I just return the LG and go for that Liteon that everyone here likes... man I should've visited here first to check, I was unaware that the liteon drives were so good (the sales guy at the outlet I bought the lg at today recommended the LG over the liteon... phhht....) Okay thanks for anything you might be able to add!

    ** EDIT**

I installed the Intel Application Acceleration Utility and now it rips at ~3.4x average. Still, that is only 1.4x faster... any ideas or should I just go get that liteon. I've read about people getting at least 6x with their dvd-roms! I need that too!

    Matt.

All drives in the United States are rip locked. What this means is that it is supposed to rip that slowly to discourage you from backing up DVD's. all you need to do to rip faster is install a hacked firmware. You can get them at rpc1.org. I can not say they are perfectly safe because they are "hacked" firmware and will void your warranty but I have been using firmware from NIL on all of my drives for a couple years now and have never had a problem.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!
