    Hi, I am having a bit of difficulty hardsubbing mkv files. My goal is to encode soft subbed mkv into hardsubbed mp4, avi, or wmv. The file is question is:
    339 mb, 24 min, 29 sec
    AVC video
    2x AC3 audio (I know how to remove one or the other)
    2 text streams (vobsub/vobsub) when extracted one is .idx and the other is .sub
    Video bitrate: 1206 kbps
    29.970 fps
    720x480
    The audio I want is 2 channel, 256 kbps, 48.0 khz
    So far I've tried using Xvid4PSP, alltoavi, avidemux, xilisoft video converter, virdualdubmod, mencoder, smplayer, SUPER, automkv, and cucusoft. Of these, only xilisoft managed to hardsub the file but the resulting file had a lot of tearing and blurring during pans or zooms. The other programs either crashed or output a file without sound, without subs, or without video.

    OS=vista basic x64

    Thanks everyone

  2. I'm surprised that none of the programs could do the hardsubbing properly. Maybe your copy of VSfilter/DirectVobSub isn't working or something.

    Why not simply encode without the subs, and leave the sub files separate and in the same folder as the video? Most players would play it properly like that, anyway.

    I know that RipBot264 does hard subbing and it can output in the .mp4 container (as well as mkv and avchd) but I have not tried it out much because I prefer multiple option soft subs. Still, you might want to give it a try.

    I've done similar conversions using Handbrake, and it worked most of the time for me.
    If Handbrake also fails, perhaps it is an idea to convert the sub file into an .srt format and then do the conversion.

    Thanks, I managed to fix my problem with handbrake by turning off 2 pass encoding. It works perfectly now
