My old ATAPI iHAP322 9 burner gave out, so I swapped it for an extra one my friend had. It is a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552L burner. When I tried to burn a disc with it at 16X, it took about ONE HOUR to complete the operation. My old burner at 16X could do the same disc in about 8 minutes. What gives? Anybody have a clue why the difference in burn completion times, even though they both burn at 16X?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Yeah...
Short answer....
Because the other burner did not have updated firmware for burning the "media" you are using at the rated speed....
But no one here know's whatthe same disc
Oy Vey..... -
Could be the burner is set to pio mode instead of udma,do a search on how to repair this if it's the problem.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
Would a burner you'd just installed be immediately shunted to PIO mode, though?
As Noahtuck asks, what brand of disc media are you using? Are the discs actually rated for 16X burns?
If you're using Imgburn to burn the disc, you might include a copy of the log from one of the burning attempts here. I don't know if any of the other burning programs make it easy to get logs from a burning run...If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
Could be set to pio since the old burner went bad.

I can only say this definitively about XP, but I know for a fact that if you are running XP that it is much easier than you might realize for the burner to get into PIO mode. If the original poster is running XP, I am sure this is the issue. Windows basically wrote XP so that if enough errors were generated by burners, and Microsoft's definition of "enough" is a lot lower than you might think, XP would panic and put the burner into PIO mode. One of the ways to handle this issue is once you get the burner out of PIO mode you have to use the registry editor to bump up the error counter value that triggers this response to its maximum, which I believe is FFFFFFFF. The only thing I can think is that because most people who use PCs don't really understand technology very well, switching potentially problematic burners to PIO mode to keep them going was a way to possibly reduce the number of calls they had to handle at Microsoft. It's a clear overreaction by XP to the problem and it's certain arguable that Microsoft setting the counter as low as they did was maybe not the best approach, but what's done is done.

Yeah but i have also bought brand new burners and they would not burn media anywhere near the rated speed and lacking a firmware update i had to speedhack firmware for that media and reflash my drive.
Some info would help. -
Well, I confirmed that the slow burner was running in PIO mode. I went into Device Manager and changed the "Transfer Mode" to "DMA if Available" and rebooted my PC. I then went back in and confirmed that it had stayed DMA. I then tried to burn another disc and it burned slow again, just like the first one. I checked again and "Current Transfer Mode" was set for "PIO Mode", even though the "Transfer Mode" field was still set for "DMA if Available" So for some reason it is defaulting to PIO. Wish I had a way to force it, because it is even playing back DVDs in a stilted manner as well.

Right click on the affected channel and uninstall it and then reboot.

Go into device manager and remove/uninstall the device, then reboot.
When the PC restarts it will say it has found a new device, installs it, etc. and it may or may not ask for a reboot again, and it should be set back to DMA, just changing it the way you did does not usually work.
That is the way most people fix PIO mode problems.
EDIT:
Oop's....
johns0 beat me to it!!!
LOL!!
It's been a loooong time since I had to do it as I have not had a PC that I have used IDE drives on in some time. -
OK, I went in to device manager and uninstalled it, then rebooted. PC found new hardware and asked for another reboot, which I did again. Went back into device manager and everything had reverted back to PIO Mode on the burner in question. Soooooooo.........?

If you have a SATA port on your mobo, which no one can know because we know nothing about what you have for equipment, you can get them as cheap as $16.00....

How old is the one you got from your friend ?
I am betting it is not very new and there is usually a reason why someone had it as an "extra drive" just sitting around.....
It's not like new dvd drives cost $1500.00 or $700.00 like they did back in the day!!! -
No, you're right. The drive I got from my friend was manufactured in 2006, so....... I really do need to just part with the money and get a new burner. Just thought I'd try the free one first...............
PS: I thought my profile listed what equipment I had??? -
Hey..... Ya can't argue with trying FREE first!!!
LOL!!!
Your profile only show's what you listed......
Your profile does not specify what motherboard you have, so no one can even come close to figuring out what connections it has.....
Seeing as there have been "literally" tens of thousands of motherboards made over the last 10 years
If someone can determine what motherboard you have from these details you listed...
Then they should be running a company that makes more money than M$ and be richer than Bill Gates!!!
LOL!!!
