  1. For some reason it isn't allowing me to burn DVD's but I can burn CD's..

When I put in a DVD it just sits there and reads it, stops but then none of my software detects the DVD in the drive.

    What could this be??

Make sure the software you are using supports the DVD player.

I had the same problem with my burner. Updated the software, firware etc. In the end it was that my manufacturer sent the wrong version of burning software with my computer.

Verbatim runs the gamut on quality. They use CMC and they also use RitekG03, both cheap media. On the other hand they use YUDEN DVD+R which is a top-drawer media.

I was going to suggest getting DVDInfo Pro and checking the Media ID, but you said the drive doesn't even see the media. I suggest trying different media in it.

It doesn't matter what experience you've had with Verbatim CDs. DVDs are a whole different world.

  5. Your model burner is DVD+R only.

Has it ever worked with any media? If not, could be defecive hardware. I'd try different media and also updating the firmware:

Are you trying to use the burning software that came with the unit? If not, I'd try using it. Many burners come with software that has been made specific to the burner it came with (crippled, so to speak). If you are using software you got with another burner originally, that might cause the problem.

Finally, I'd also check in device manager to see that Windows is correctly recognizing it and there are no conflicts.

    ****EDIT****

What Shocker Milwaukee mentioned would also be the problem if you are trying some other media.
