I have a Phillips DVP642 and realized that your need to finalize the DVD to get it read quickley on the DVD player. I have a DVD wtih a little over 4 gig of movies and try to copy it to my hard drive. I am unable to do it under XP or Win2000. It starts and gets a error of some type or just hangs up. The same DVD will play in the Phillips 642 DVD player after about 1 to 2 minutes of loading up. Anyone have any suggestions?

As far as your dvd writer or dvd-rom is concerned it may just not like the media either. It would help if you posted the errors instead of just "of some type". Is it crc errors?
