  1. Hey, as present from my parents I just got a DVD Read/Write drive to keep me off their computer - they just got one about 2 months ago and I've been on it a lot making back-ups of DVDs.

They got me a LG Super Multi DVD Drive - GSA-4160B.

It was 16 x DVD speed.

Now that I have it on my comp, it reads and encodes DVDs at a snails pace! about 930 KB/S it encodes.

It took over 2 hours what would take about 45 minutes using my parents drive.

Here is the thing though: The DVD drive on the other computer was 12 X LG, this is 16 x and is priced higher, so I assume it is better.

Why is my drive encoding so slowly?

It also took about an hour or more for it to burn a DVD. On the other computer it took about 14 min tops.

    Help.

  3. My DVD-Rs are 8X Verbatin DVD-rs. Same as I used on the other computer.

Any ideas on what the problem may be?

I have Windows SP2 with the 16 X LG burner, and the computer with the 12 X Buner does not have SP2 and is much much much faster.

  4. Is it verifying the data after it burns? this takes some time to. Is your burning program set to burn at 8x or lower. Maybe the cable as well, but i will let this go and wait for a more experienced member with some other options.

Is the burner setup as Master or Slave. If it's master you will need to check to see if it's DMA enabled and not in PIO mode. If your using Win XP try the link below to check and change to DMA.

  6. Hey thanks for the input.

Shortly after posting this topic, I did a lot more research on my problem and figured out that it wasn't in DMA mode.

It was locked in PIO mode.

So I took it back to the place where it got installed and they took care of it.

Now everything is running much more smoothly and faster.
