  1. using a sony vaio comp with a hp 1170 external burner.the internal broke down a while ago and is too expensive to fix.using the external fine for a while and using it alot.alot.I thought it was the dma thing cos when I uninstalled and rebooted it would fix it for a while anyway.this went on for months.now that fix won't help.it would take a couple hours to rip and burn.firmware and drivers updated.burner does seem to make more noise too.on vista if that makes a diff.there are 3 ata channels 0 0 and 1 only see dma in the middle one 0.the others don't have anything in properties to inc=dicate dma enabling.to make mattters worse getting some burn fails now.on different media not just one.this is happening on dvd shrink and nero, which I unistalled clean tooled tried again with no luck.this is the burn fail log if that might help.maybe its just the burner?thanks for any other ideas

  2. That's a USB drive so the IDE/ATA DMA settings don't apply. The USB port dropping from USB 2.0 to 1.1 speed would explain your problem. Are you using a hub? If so, try connecting the drive directly to the computer instead.

  3. thanks, appreciate the reply.I am connected to comp not using a hub

I recommend Imgburn for burning - Nero can get a little strange at times.

  6. If the drive is dropping from USB 2.0 to 1.1 frequentsly I would try a different cable.

  7. you mean the cable between burner and comp right?sorry for my ignorance
    thanks

Yes. I don't think it's a likely source of the problem but it's worth a shot. You may need to uninstall the USB drivers and reboot for the driver to revert to USB 2.0.

  9. I tried a diff cable w/o luck .when u say unistall usb drivers, thats just the ones that say usb human interface or the whole lot that say HID compliant device?appreciate your help

  10. no luck therebut I just uninstalled the 3 usb drivers, worth a try, still thinking it could be the burner its had alot of use and it does seem to make a bit more noise these days

Everything under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".

And when you reboot the USB drivers will be reinstalled and your mouse will work again.

On some old motherboards pairs of USB ports switched together. So if you have a 1.1 peripheral in one one port the other is forced to 1.1 too.

jfrenchu - you may be onto something.

If you have another external writer, have you tried writing with it?

If you google that model of HP, you are not alone.

I have a friend who goes through external drives - I just rebuilt a Plextor 716UF that died.

I had to stick a 712 drive in the thing - but it'll burn 12X (as a 712 should) in the 716 house.

I tend to upgrade drives on a regular basis, and have had no failures from use (some DOA); but if they're rated for 10,000 cycles - they die.
