Great! Those discs will, of course, cost $30 each instead of the $15 we're paying now. Oh, and they will work on only 20% of set top players instead of the 75% we're currently "enjoying".
And last but not least, they don't work with ANY current burning applications, as opposed to the current batch of +R DL's which work sporadically sometimes with Nero only.

I think DL has got a ways to go yet before it's mainstream instead of fringe
I think I'll hold out for the Pioneer DVD-R DL myself

Where the heck is all of this going? how much do they want to fit on one disc. I am waiting for the 8x DL burners too, but for how long and you know that they will come out with somthing better after they stop making money on the 8x DL's. Right now I am just buy hard drives that are dirt cheap and putting them into enclosures, at least that way I can have my info and delete if i want to, but theres two sides to erything.

I dont even follow news of this kind anymore. When I will see 8x DL blanks at affordable prices in my stores - then I'll check vcdhelp.com database of comments for good writer and just buy it.
Couple weeks I was just browsing the aisles in a large electronics store (computers section ofcoz. Salesdude thought Im looking for some crappy HP or whatever junk they had there, and started praise it to me with "it has 16x dvd writer and ...blah blah blah. I told him to bring me a box of 16x blanks and I'll take it
But hey - he wasnt that stupid as I thought at first
He asked me are +R blanks OK, because he knows they only have 4x -Rs in store... I wonder if he's still searching through the shelves for those damn 16x DVD+Rs for me
Hmm, I hope they dont sell 16x blanks yet?Just to be safe I better tell them next time to get me 16x DL blanks with that 'puter

Right now, only 4x media is price-effective unless you find 8x on sale.
I'm sure that soon 8x will be affordable.
I haven't even SEEN any 12x yet - is it on store shelves anywhere?
16x? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Dual layer media sells for $10-$15 each, IF you can find it, and nobody's computer can burn them reliably.
Come to think of it, I have yet to hear of anyone burning at 16x realiable - perhaps due to lack of media.
So I'll stick with my current drive, thanks.

I'm still using my 3 year-old Sony DRU-120A. It burns DVD+R only @ 2.4x. I flashed with Ricoh firmware awhile back so that it burns disks with DVD-ROM booktype. I've burned over a thousand disks now and never a coaster. All my disks play in 100% of the players out there. Many people have asked me why my disks will play in thier players, when every other burned disk they tried wouldn't.
Sure it takes 25 min to burn a full disk, but it's worth the piece of mind it brings. Nothing beats 100% success. I won't upgrade until this drive dies, by that time we'll probably be burning disks with 20 GIG capacity.Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

Dude, change booktypes as much as you want - yet those players that cant read +R wont simply read them (try i.e. Matsushita SR-8587, Apex 600 series, or just find some models in the player section on this board).
Those players that suddenly will read +R with faked booktype simply were capable of reading them all time (hardware-wise), its just that their firmware was poor or old and doesnt include +R type, thats all.

It sounds like your envious. What's the matter, are you having trouble getting a high compatabilty rate?

Hey, he has 100% success within his client-base.
That's NOT mutually exclusive with 90% success in a larger group, or ever 60% success with the public-at-large.
He works in a particular geographic area. That area is likely serviced by a local CompUSA or Staples or Circuit City.
So long as his burns work with the drives sold by those stores... he's golden. LOL.
Nah, who am I kidding. He's lying.

Why does everyone think the blank DL discs are still 10- 15 USD ?
Newegg has them with rebate for about 20 bucks shipped for 3 which is $6.66.
I'm not saying they are cheap so don't go there,i'm just saying, if you have a long movie you would like to "back up", 6.66 is cheaper than 15.
Now if it's a cheap DVD just buy 2. If it's a 30 dollar "art" film, now i can save 24 dollars.

Sorry, i must have missed the "qualifying" of the locally part. I didn't see that.
Who in their right mind would buy them locally for 3 or 4 dollars more a disc than you can get them on the internet for in the US ?
Ordering away or taking risks ?
That's a weak argument. The Lite-On 16x burner is 139.99 locally also (at Best Buy) but can be had for 60 dollars less on the net.
If people are stupid enough to have to buy the DL discs locally for some unwritten rule, then do it but quit overexagerrating.
Whether or not there are your perceived risks is not the point. The point is that dual layer discs can be had for 6.66 per disc. Whether or not you choose to do it doesn't change the fact they are available for that price.
I would have to argue that most anyone on this forum that orders discs in any kind of quantity does so over the internet and takes those "risks" all the time. Maybe even a majority of people here order their doscs and don't buy them at a brick and mortar store so i think that argument is weak. You take less risk ordering the discs from the net than you do getting into your car and driving 5 miles or more to get them.
