Hi,
I've been trying to get to grips with avi to vcd for a couple of weeks now. I got enthused when I converted an avi file to vcd, (vdub + tmpgenc, vdceasy) burned it and it worked fine on my stand-alone DVD. So I decided to translate the file dialogue and subtitle.
Using Tmpgenc & vobsub made the video look very green, so I used virtualdub and Avery Lee's subtitle filter, frameserving it to tmpgenc for mpeg-1 conversion. The audio source was a wav file extraction by vdub. The result looked fine on the PC, but no video or audio appeared on the standalone DVD. It did recognise the disc as a vcd, though.
The burning software was the same in both instances, VCDEasy, I didn't mess with compression settings in vdub. Did I miss something very obvious here? Anyone any ideas?
After this failed, I went back to the original avi file and tried to run it through vdub+subtitler filter saving as avi; thinking to convert video&audio from the same source in tmpenc. About 10,000 frames into virtualdub 'save as avi', the same error keeps appearing: 'cannot seek into file...wrong parameter'
So, my wits end hereAlso, my stack of empty cdr's
Suggestions, please, anyone?

Did you also frameserve from VDub in your first successful attempt?
You say the mpeg look fine before authoring as VCD, but the auhored VCD wont play, even if it's recognized as VCD. Or does it play, but shows nothing?
Did you use the VCD template in TMPGEnc in both cases?
Many questions!

This to add..
It seems I am using a third-party kvcd template in Tmpgenc. I remember I did use the original vcd PAl template for my fourth attempt, with exactly the same result (will play, no sound or video).
I used the 'scan for error' option in vdub: no errors there.
The fixed framerate doesn't apply does it? I mean, since the first vcd worked ok and I didn't alter any settings in either virtualdub or tmpgenc? -
I'd guess that the frameserving is the problem somehow. Or did the mpeg play fine on your computer (the output from TMPGEnc after frameserving)?
What do you mean by "the fixed frame rate"? But as you say, as the first worked, and subsequent attempts fail, and you haven't changed any TMPGEnc settings, the problem is earlier in the chain. (Or possibly later, but since I would trust my life to VCDEasy I doubt that...)

The frameserve Tmpegenc output file worked fine on the computer, good audio, video. So I was confident enough to use VCDeasy to burn.
I compared the VCDEasy cd's (first good one and this one. both have same file structure and both .dat files play fine in desktop media player..
Thanks, mate. I guess I'll go figure out a way to add the subtitles without using vdub. -
This seems really odd, cause if the mpeg plays fine, and you haven't made any changes later in the process, I can't understand why the VCD wouldn't play.

I'll run through the whole thing again and keep notes. Thanks again. I realise it's been a lengthy read.
