  1. Just wondering how many people do this. I've just started using Skype - anyone else on this?

    Hello,

I've used the built in audio chat with Yahoo messenger once. It was neat! A friend of mine was online at the same time and popped up and started chatting. Like a phone call

    Never.
I already cannot stand the AIM and others.
I'd rather pick up a phone.

You get yourself a microphone and use your PC speakers, or you get one of those headsets with all-in-one with the little boom mic.

Then you start the app, click the "call" button to call your contact, and you have a full duplex conversation. It's better than a phone because the sound quality is flawless. And ...you can have up to four people talking at the same time - like a conference call.

This afternoon I had a really nice three-way call with Cobra and flaninacupboard. Absolutely amazing how there is zero delay - even though I was on the other side of the pond, good quality and absolutely addictive. It was nice talking to people instead of seeing just text on a screen. It's soooo much better even than real-time chat. And it's free I highly recommend it

I often use audiochat for long-distance calls but prefer videochat.

Anyone managed to get videochat working at more than 4fps?
    Regards,

Its funny, I used to do software SQA for a company that made a telephony application (back when you paid for them, meaning yahoo and co hadn't released them for free yet, thats actually what killed us in the end) ANYWAY I've only ever even used the thing as part of my job.

So I worked with the stuff and didnt' really use it. I do have a friend who uses a private chat server as part of his EQ guild though.

I use TeamSpeak to chat with my online gaming buds....

Sounds better than talking on the phone - and we get like 20 of us at once on there with no lag or ill effects on our pc's...

You could use Netmeeting to video conference over the net if you want.

Had a conversation with Cobra and tgpo today.

tgpo - Dude ...I'm sorry about the speech impediment. I think you're very brave trying to fit into society with the Tourette's Syndrome, the excessive lisp, and the uncontrollable belching. Very brave

You didn't have to wait for his microphone to dry out from all the drooling shorting it out At least Cobra was there and we made fun of him while he was offline

tgpo knows I'm telling the truth

I tried my best at normal conversation, but Cap kept asking me to send him pictures of me in a thong. I told him the line must be drawn here, and indicated it on a medical chart.

So Cap, did I sound like you thought I would?

Almost exactly For the record ...no speech impediments, unless you count a South Carolina accent as an impediment ...and I don't. It's not like you're a Texan or anything .....just kidding .....
<ducks ...them Texans own scatterguns >

How did I sound to you? Was the flatulence distracting, or could you hear me OK? Did I sound like you expected? Or did I come off as halfway sane? Wait ..... ......

To be honest I dunno what I expected. I think I was expecting more of an accent from ya'.

I'm surprised you and Cobra laughed as much as y'all did at my weird sence of humor(It's doesn't translate all that well into text here on the forum).

    We're just as weird

I guess I don't have much of an accent, or if I have one I guess you'd call it "midwestern" being raised in Chicago. A little "nort" instead of "north" and "youse guys" for "you guys", but I'm working on it still

We have a big mix here in New Mexico ...hispanic accents, Texans, transplanted left-coasters and right-coasters. Go into Rio Rancho and you'd swear you were in Brooklyn. Go into the south valley and you're in Chihuahua, Mexico. In Sandia Heights it's Harvard and Princeton speech.

You didn't have as much of an accent as I expected. Are one or both of your parents from another state? It sounds like you only have the slightest accent. Now Cobra has an accent ...very Scottish

I'm having trouble typing this because of the laughing fit I had over your animated ChrisX and Beave. Hahaha. Good job

You had already asked the question. :P

I do not see any reason why they would not work.

Just have to say, from reading the feedback on here about Skype - I installed it on my home PC and my laptop so that my wife and I could talk while I'm here in Toronto for the week.

The clarity and quality is amazing! It's like we are sitting right next to each other. Now, they need to have some sort of video add on for video conferencing. I use MSN Messenger for the video feed and Skype to talk with her (for some reason, I can not get the audio feed to work on MSN).

My 4 year old is tickled pink that she gets to talk and SEE her daddy while he is away on business.... We get online everyday after I get off of work...

Thanks guys for the info in this thread. You made a sentimental guy like me enjoy my trip a lot more than if I would have been restricted to expensive phone calls...
