Hi All
I have been having a go at burning a DVD-ROM(UDF) with Toast 6 and an external Pioneer 108 drive.
On setting up the data burn I notice that in advanced I cannot pick the Buffer Underrun Prevention mode. I start the burn and then if I start opening folders and doing general things up pops a Buffer Underrun error message.
If I just let the burn go without doing anything else on the machine all is fine.
Thanks for your time.

whats the mhz of your machine? memory size?
may just be too much of an Umph for your burning speed [which is what by the way???] -
The processor (G4?) and RAM (assuming you mean Meg not K) should be adequate. Try burning at a slower speed. Maybe at 1X first and see if you can get better with subsequent burns.

Hi
Oooops
Machine speed 700mhz G4
Mem size:- 512 Meg
Burn speed 4X
------------------------------------
I can get a burn OK, it is just if I start doing other things whilst I am doing the burn, maybe not a wise thing to do, but I did and thats when I got/get the overrun error...

Early versions of Toast 6 had a problem with the buffer underrun prevention. Make sure you are using Toast 6.0.7. Also buffer underrun only works with DVD-R or DVD-RW discs. DVD+R and DVD+RW take care of this through the hardware rather than Toast's software, so the option isn't available when you are using +R/RW media.
You should be able to do other things without getting a buffer underrun error. The only thing that should happen is the time it takes to complete the burn is extended. -
It looks like we found one of those advantages to using -R media. Toast says,
Note that Buffer Underrun Prevention is not an option when using DVD+R/RW blank media. Some combination DVD+R/RW & DVD-R/RW recorders do support Buffer Underrun Prevention, but only when using -R/RW blank media.
Buffer Underrun Prevention is not an option when using +R/RW media, since the recorder uses the built-in error prevention that is part of the +R/RW specification.
What type of machine is this? Sounds like an iSomething or upgraded PM. Do you have any other device connected to the Firewire bus or PCI bus if using an upgraded machine? I have a dual 1.25 and regularly burn to an internal 107 while encoding video, surfing, browsing around the HD, copying from a firewire disk, editing audio with Peak, or whatever. Heck, I even play Halo while burning at 4x. Never had a problem. 8) -

Hi
Hmmm, Upgrade my OS, I have read many stories of machines going wonkey after OS upgrades ans programes being lost and things stopping working.
I will bear the upgrade route in mind, thanks.

wha? thing is 10.3 has been out for sooo long and we are all running it. I didnt have any problems switching from 10.3 at all
if you are worried solutions are
1. partition your drive and install an os on one partition, then when upgrading comes around you install on the 2nd partition so you can still switch bac
2. if you have 2 hd's do the same
this is what i do, just incase something happens i can still boot off my other drive. but i have yet to have to boot into 10.2
when 10.4 comes out, the 10.2 drive will be updated to 10.4 and ill have 10.3 as a backup
what happens when you burn at 2x, can you open other apps then? you should be able to do just about anything while burning
