Checking the "how-to's", I see a tutorial about copying a DVD to DVDR first using DVDdecryptor, then using DVD shrink.
However, another guide says that the latest version of DVD shrink can handle encryption in addition to compression.
I'll be receiving my burner at the end of the month, so cannot test this, but what unique features does DVDdecryptor have that cannot be achieved just using DVD Shrink?
BTW, this is in NO way to be interpreted as bashing DVD decryptor - it is obvious from hundreds of posts that it is a fantastic application.

Hello,
You can use just dvdshrink. It shrinks a dual layer disc down to a single layer disc so you can make a "backup". Dvddecrypter merely rips the files to your harddrive. That's the difference.

But I've found using certain versions of both programs also comes into play. Use what works best for you.

Every once in a great while, DVD Shrink will pop up a message saying "copy protection error" or something like that, and not be able to copy a disc.
I've never had that happen with DVD Decrypter. -
ditto to the other comments. 99% of the time I use dvdshrink to rip and then dvddecrypter to burn. When I have a disc that shrink throws an error on, I use dvddecrypter to rip it in file mode (every once in awhile in ISO mode). The reason behind file mode is that if one of the vob's is giving me trouble, I can use other dvdrom drives to rip just that one vob rather than having to rerip everything else.

OK, lets see if I have this correct: DVDdecryptor seems less prone to error while ripping, and also offers burning capabilities, and these are major reasons to just it in conjunction with DVD shrink???
If a DVD does not need to be compressed, does DVD shrink bring anything to the table that is necessary for duplication?
Also, mention was made of file mode, vs "ISO" mode..... I gather ISO mode is some kind of image mode? How are the 2 different with respect to DVD duplication?
Thanks again in advance for the info. Hope some day I have the ability to return the favor once I understand this stuff better. -
Hello,
If its single layer dvdshrink will just rip it like dvddecrypter.
I've never had any read errors with dvdshrink but if you do then you could use dvd decrypter.
Iso mode is when it's ripped to one file called "something.iso" then you load that into a burner (or use dvddecrypter) program to duplicate.

Before I got my burner....I used to experiment taking a chapter from a DVD with DVDShrink - then burning it to a CD...thus creating a cDVD or miniDVD. It will play and react just like a DVD in your computer BUT it most likely wont play on your standalone DVD player.
I believe I used to create an iso image then burn with DVDDecrypter. It's a bit of a waste of money but you can see for yourself that once you get your burner....it will work.
Just a thought..... -

In regards to the "iso" vs "file" mode, when you use DVD Decrypter to rip to ISO mode, is the ISO going to be the size of the actual DVD, so ~4.3G. I am using Windows ME (I know, I know), and it can't recognize anything over 1.99G (I know because when I put a DVD with my backups, it only said 1.99G, but it was obviously ~4G)
I've been ripping it into file mode only, and has worked for me. Can I still rip it into ISO mode if I ever feel like it. Or is this only for NTFS users? -

@IAmNotAPirate,
The newer version of DVDShrink will split the ISO when used on FAT32,if you use DVDDecrypter make sure to split files at 4GB in Settings. -
God, you guys have forgotten more than I am ever likely to know about this stuff!!
Thanks for the education!!! I do not yet have the burner, but have been experimenting with both applications to get a better idea of how they each work. Keep the input coming!
