I use Roxio Creator and it automatically will split the file over two discs for you. When you later want to restore it to one, it will do that for you as well, seamlessly. I did this with a 7 gig file and it worked perfectly. I, however, don't know of any free programs that will do the same thing.

that's what it will look like. When you insert one of the dvd's roxio's "restore" program or whatever it is called will ask you if you want to basically reattach the file together.

Any backup program should be able to do this. If you have the Nero suite there is a backup program included.

    cheers for the replies

i had a closer look at NERO and tried out its BackItUp

it did what i wanted, spanned my file across 2 disks.

but it converts it to some backup type files, Im going to have to see how easy it is to restore.

i was hoping it would just cut the file in half back up the 2 halves

Sorry, all backup programs do that. It won't be a problem restoring though, unless the discs become damaged in some way.
I would use grade A media for anything important, but that has nothing to do with the backup software.

  12. I've never done it, but you should be able to cut your video in half yourself with an editing program and rejoin them later with the same program. I think TMPGenc will do it without reencoding and I've noticed some programs in the tools section that may do this. That would give you the options of cutting where you want.
If it works, don't fix it.
