OT slow today, so I'm sharing a story

I have to say I cannot complain, I have all good classes this year. No behavior problems...nothing.

I made mention of this fact yesterday and a girl speaks up and says:
"I don't know if you know why or not, but you do have a reputation around here Mr. Northcat."

and I look at the rest of the class in disbelief and they are all nodding

I said "I do? Good or Bad?"

She said "Both"

I asked her to explain and she said: "Well I heard that if people are on your good side then you are a cool teacher and a lot of fun. But if you get on your bad side I heard you can be one of the biggest A-holes on earth. Is that true?"

and before I said anything a girl I had last year said "YES that is a fact, sorry Mr. Northcat, I'm not trying to be mean, just honest but you are pretty mean to students and teachers who cross you."


I guess I need to work harder on my Captain Sunshine persona....and here I thought I was getting better at it

I don't think your image needs any work. If the students think that you're a big ******* if they cross you, they won't cross you. Same for being a nice guy to the students who behave and work hard.

dont let it get to you North..its like this sometimes to be a good person to shape them kids or have them learn, you have to be a "a-hole" ................its like parents trying to be their kid's friends and not their parents.
The way I see it I will be a parent first ( or a teacher in your case ) and then a friend.... and hopefully if its done the right way they will look back in their life and thank for your style of doing things...

I think you just have to ask yourself "Can a person in you bad book get back into your good book?"

If the answer is yes then I wouldn't worry too much - if no then you've got something to work on...

Just my two cents... I've got a friend who's a highschool teacher, I feel for some of what you go through.

I have an E-3 who used to be substitute teacher. He looks really squeaky clean in an almost nerdy sort of way. One day, while we sitting around talking, someone asked him if the big football players ever gave him any flak.

"No, they were as easy to put the fear on as any of the kids."

It is funny though, to watch an E-3 tutor an E-6 when the E-6 has never taken a college course before, and the E-3 is a college grad. You have to see it to believe it. Sort of reminded me of Sean Penn and Dakota Fanning in I am Sam.

All I know is this one girl needs to bring her mother to parent-teacher "conferences"...holy cow...man you should see this lady, matter of fact, you probably have...she use to be a model

Just thinking about this statement....is that morally or ethically wrong? I'm perplexed because my only connection to this possible hook up is through a under 18 student...even though the "subject" is of age?
