I just started evaluating using Virtaldub to capture from my AIW 7500. I like capturing in AVI. The problem is that virtualdub does not like files larger than 2GB, how do I get around this?

    Thanks

  2. What version of Virtual Dub are you using.

I've been able to capture uncompressed AVI with it and my AIW 7500 Radeon without trouble.

I would suggest that if you are using an older version of VirtualDub, to upgrade to the newest.

  3. AFAIK, vdub will happily capture much larger files than that. Your comp profile says you are using WinXP, but what filesystem are you using?

FAT32 has a 4Gb file limit and some apps (for some unknown reason) can only cope with 2gig files under Fat32. NTFS has no practical filesize limit.

I am using version 1.5.10 and my file system is NTFS. Using other software I routinely capture 26GB files.

Did older versions of virtualdub have a file size limitation? Maybe I have some other preference or setup setting set wrong?

I fiddled with this problem a little bit more and it is not a file size limitation. It is a problem with Ulead VideoStudio 8. It seems that some of the avi files captured with virtualdub will not open in vs8. I get one of two error messages; the file is not available or the file is not accessable.

I can open the file in other apps. Any ideas?

I don't know if this advice applies to your situation, since I have no real knowledge about improvements made to VS7 and 8, but as an owner of VS5 and 6, I know all too well that VS doesn't 'play nice' with certain codecs. Since you haven't stated what kind of AVI codec you are using (without getting too technical, AVI is not a codec per se, but merely a "wrapper" for various codecs), I would suggest that you try capturing in a few common codec and trying to import them. What is passing and what is not? I don't think VS is kind to mp4-based codecs (xvid, divx, mp42, et al.), either, if I remember right...

I will find out what codec virtaldub is using and I will try other codes to see if there is a compatibility problem with vs8.

    Thanks

Signed 32 bit integers are limited to 2G as opposed to unsigned.
For example, VB does not allow unsigned integers. (except bytes)

    That makes sense.

So its bad application coding using signed ints for file size calculations thats the problem!

(I should have been able to work that one out for myself, I am a programmer. Thanks FOO )
