I bought an OEM dvdrw drive and totally forgot that IDE cables does not come along with it.
Can I use an ordinary IDE cable (that came along with my old cd-rom drive) or does it need to be a specific IDE cable for the new dvd drives?

As long as you aren't still using the really old-school 40 pin cables you'll be fine.

Even old 40-pin cable should work. DVD/CD-drives are only 16.6 Mb/s, 80-pin Ultra-ATA cables are needed only for speeds 66 Mb/s and faster.

Not all system still like 40-pin cabling though. I tried to put a burner in an older PC that had a CD drive on a 40-pin and the burner would not work at all even when alone on that cable. Just replaced it with an 80-pin and it worked. Maybe it's just a finicky drive.
