If you right click the shortcut and select properties>compatibility tab. Check the run in compatibility mode then select the OS. Not sure if that applys that property to just the shortcut or the target.

Edit: Now that I looked there's a link at the bottom of the compatibility tab, or there's a link in your accessories on the start menu for the wizard.

If you tried that, then the only other recourse would be to either get another hard drive and install win98 or use a program like partition magic, resize the partition. Then create a FAT32 partition and install 98 on the same drive.

I had some issues with my accounting software running under XP, it was simply a matter of installing MS VM. Fortunatley it was on the disc (try finding that on the MS site) and the fix was well documented. Have you tried the website of the manufacturer or doing a google search.

    -or-

    1. Remove disc from computer.

    2. Place on stump.

    3. Smash with axe.

Ever wonder if Bill and all his buddies are sitting around laughing when they make some of this software? Could you see the board meeting? "OK we're going to make an OS that won't run anything older than 3 years.

It was designed to handle older operating systems.

My college uses it on windows xp trying to run 2003 and linux.

The dell computers are underpowered to run virtual pc.

The computers need about another gig of ram.

I may give it a whirl. Looks like they have a 45-day Free Trial Edition.

That is hilarious, they sell a product so apps can be used that should work in the first place. I don't understand the technical particulars, I do understand that technically they are two seperate OS's. But is it rteally that hard for them to make XP compatible with older software. I have an emulator that will play original video games all the way back to the early 80's using XP. They are the originals, you even have to "insert coin" by hitting a keyboard button.

Am I missing something here? Isn't the reason it doesn't work because the files needed to run it have been changed? Can't they just have copies of the originals and have the os point to them when you select run this as a Win98 app?

Am I expecting too much here? I haven't had the any trouble with compatibility issues because I don't have any older software I wish to run but I'd be pretty pissed if I did.

VPC on the PC is mainly used for testing software. Also some tech support places use it so that tech can see all the OSes at their local machine.

I considered using it to try and see if DOS games would play.

As far as its speed, if you have a decently fast computer then the secret to VPC is RAM. RAM RAM RAM RAM. I'd say 512mb to even THINK about running it. 1gig+ all the better.

From one standpoint part of the problem with all the Windows OS upgrades is that they're still trying to support older apps. If they could just write off the older apps and say 'we're moving to 64-bit, if you (vendors)want your apps to work, recompile them for 64-bit' software (and hardware) would have been a lot further along than it is now. It's like the whole platoon slowing down to make sure the slowest man can keep up. Sure we all (for the most part) stay together, we're just way behind where we could be.

Also, how does VMWare compare to VirtualPC?

  16. I still have a copy of the last Connectix version of VPC (before they sold it off to M$). Still think it runs faster than Bill's version (having tested the trial). Lessee, I got four VPC's running NT3.51, NT4, DOS/WFW & OS/2 4. All networked via the MS Loopback & ICS in XP.
Like a flea circus at a dog show!
