  1. I am not entirely sure how to explain this one but I was wondering if you thought that my choice of VD filters might be causing this strange rippling effect.

I normaly capture my VHS to Huffy with Virtual Dub. After editing I filter with the Flaxen VHS filter. I have tried many different filters and combinations of filters but this seems to be the most pleasing as far as my "eyes" are concerned. Recently I tried a different filter chain after reading an old post...I tries NRS (Antonio Foranna) in conjunction with Chroma Noise Reduction 1.1 (Gilles Mouchard). The results on my monitor were outstanding, so I processed a few files and burnt them to an RW and viewed on my TV. While the quality during no motion (talking heads) seems to be the best that I have seen to date, any motion or movement at all appears to have a rippling effect almost likes waves in a pond (I am not talking about interlace lines). I find it odd that this only occurs while watching on a television. Aside from the new filters the only other change made was that I am using a different burner. I can't imagine the burner would have any effect on this so I will have to assume that it is the filters.

Has anyone used these filters before? The Chroma one does say that high levels may cause artifacts, however, wouldn't those artifacts appear both on a monitor and a PC?

Edit: My TMPGENC settings haven't changed either...352x480, interlaced, VBR 4000 (max 6000, min 2000) 29.97fps

    Thanks

  2. I have noticed a trend lately that my questions seem to go unanswered.

Anyway...through trial and error it would appear that the resize filter in Virtual Dub is the cause of my "rippling". I am not sure why as I have always used it the same way and at the same settings which is why I didn't mention it in my original post...(Precise bicubic A=1.00). I had assumed it was the temporal filter properties of NRS that was the culprit but it doesn't appear to be so.

So I have decided to let TMPGEnc do the resizing for me.
