I am looking for a standalone DVD player that will be, at least for start, connected to a stereo amplifier.

Therefore, the DVD player must be able to output analog stereo from Dolby Digital 5.1 (not just from Dolby Digital 2.0 as some DVD disks doen't have a 2.0 audio track).

    I read here
    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=233634
that "Most DVD players will output a 2 channel sound (to send to your TV or to a stereo amp if you want bigger speakers). They do that by DECODING the digital stream and down-sampling the 5.1 into stereo."

So it says "most DVD player" (not all…). How to know if a DVD player can output a 2 channel sound from Dolby Digital 5.1 ? If it has 2 RCA audio connectors on the back ?

Basically, yes. If there is a right and left audio output, it would go to just about any amplifier, usually into the line or CD input. The DVD player should also have coaxial, optical or other encoded output for a reciever with Dolby or surround sound capabilites.

    Hello,

Ditto to what redwudz said. I have a sony dvps360 with stereo out, optical out and coaxial out. I know have it hooked up to a digital receiver via coaxial cables but my first receiver was a Dolby Pro Logic receiver.

The stereo only cables (old rca type) will deliver stereo sound - and pro logic sound for those encoded in it. You will get GOOD surround sound from any 5.1 dvd on the Pro Logic. It just won't be true digital surround sound - it will be downmixed to the pro logic equivalent.

P.S. Any Dvd player with stereo outputs will sound GOOD on any stereo receiver - surround sound or not. It's just the newer the receiver the better it will sound (ie stereo rear speakers for digital receivers versus mono rear speakers and no dedicated subwoofer (the .1) on Pro Logic.
