    Does anyone know how to take an AVI and make it an animated GIF for avatars?

    You could open the AVI in VirtualDub

    Under File select Save Image Sequence...and that'll convert the frames to BMP images.


    You can open the images in Paintshop Pro's Animation Shop and edit 'em way you desire....then save (it'll be a gif file)


    Keep in mind that avators here have to be under 6KB, so that's not giving you much to work with
