  1. I have 2 DVDs. Both play fine on my PC using PowerDVD. But when I try to play them on my StandAlone TV DVD Player one plays fine but the other one displays the messsge 'This type of disc cannot be played". I have used DVDInfo on both of the DVDs and they look identical. Both were burned on my PC using Nero ... both are the same brand/speed media. Regions are the same, format is the same .... any ideas of how I can find out what the problem is. This 'not able to play' problem surfaces maybe 1 out of every 10-15 DVDs ... all are created from a NewsGroup DL Source .... any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Sounds like its a media problem, try a good quality brand such as maxell dvd-r,look up newsgroups on google.com,every server provides a news service which you access them with.Newsgroups can be warez but it encompasses much more than that, discussion, forums, help, pictures etc..

Do you use Ritek Media? Also what kind of DVD Player is it?

I have exclusively been using Ritek Media and I have a similar problem, although much a much higher ratio of good to bad, more like 1 in 30 are bad, although they do play with a software player (PowerDVD) and on a newer DVD Player then mine. Nero's discscan says that the disc is alright.

  7. Oh yeah .... I've tried to burn a second DVD and it still fails .... I'm thinking that it isn't a media problem (but might be) but I'm having a hard time figuring out what it is.

Maybe its a PAL source and only one of the players you have can convert PAL to NTSC. It may say Region 1 or Region free but still be a PAL source.

    Your best solution:

If the movie is available commercially, buy it. It is well worth the purchase to save you the hassle of mucking about with newsgroup downloads.

  10. Thats one of the things I was thinking that it could be ..... getting something in PAL .... I was trying to find some software that would tell me if a DVD was PAL or NTSC but I wasn't able to find one. Know of any?

  11. I think I found it .... was looking around the guides for converting PAL to NTSC and visa versa ..... found a tool called InfoEdit ......sure enough I downloaded InfoEdit .... and looked ... the DVD that doesn't play is PAL .... and both of my players say they will not play PAL .... now all I need to do is to convert it and reburn it and see it the problem is fixed.
