I just purchased a Zen Vision W, which has a 480x272 pixel screen and uses a 16:9 aspect ratio. I want to get some of my DVD movies on it to watch on the plane, i got all the software and know how to convert, i just cant get the video sizing right. The video im trying right now is Sin City. According to the box it has a 1.85:1 aspect ratio... The software im using is IMtoo DVD Ripper platinum 4. im setting video size to 480x272, as thats the actual size of the screen, in aspect ratio i select 16:9, as the screen is 16:9. However, should i be setting that aspect ratio to 1.85:1 to work correctly?
when i tried it using 16:9 ratio it was almost like Sin City was a fullscreen movie on a widescreen tv, there were pillars on the left and right.. the whole reason i bought a vision W is to take advantage of the widescreen... also there is a "zoom" feature on encoding where you can select letterbox, medium, pan&scan, or full.. i choose full because that says "original aspect ratio" next to it which is what im assuming is right...
any help is appreciated sorry if this post is confusing

Don't be fooled by what it says on the box...
ALL DVDs are either 4:3 or 16:9.
While the VISIBLE portion of the movie is meant to be seen as 1.85:1, the DVD actually includes (above and below) letterboxing to fill it out to 16:9 (aka 1.78:1). THESE SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED.
Pretend the source is 720x480 16:9. You want your final video size to be 480x272, but I don't know if it is expecting square pixels or not. My guess is NOT, as 480/272 = 1.76... (nearly 1.78 ).
I don't use IMToo (don't really trust consumer/all-in-one apps like that), so I can't tell you what option to choose.
You could always try all the permutations (pick 1 from column A, 1 from column B, etc) and find out the permutation that works...
What does the manual say?

try super
use the options box, and choose the timer, ecode only 5 minutes of video , and do it with different settings
then choose the one you like best
a movie that is piller boxed is going to stay that way unless you zoom in ( not an option in super )
or you crop the black out, but then you loose a portion of the top and bottom when make the sides touch the display
and your next video will likely have different settings
I run into the same thing converting for my phone
