  1. I just got an archos video player and it is great. I use VirtualDub to convert my mpeg files. I use the Divx 5.2 Codec for Video, and the Lame MP3 audio codec..set at CBR 128kbs.....44 HZ setting (the one that is usually recommended for near cd quality)....

When I play my files back, I hear soft sqeaking noises, like someone scratching their fingernails against a chalkboard. It's not loud..but annoying...and this isn't in the original mpeg file. does anybody have any recommendations?

To me 128kb/s sounds like a transistor radio being played underwater.
Try the maximum bitrate possible and see if it improves.
Also try PCM and see if the noise disappears.

    PCM is uncompressed audio.
If I was using virtual dub it is shown as uncompressed audio. Essentially it is WAV file so it is a big file but that's what I have to do to get rid of the underwater gurgling sound.

However I have noticed that MPG2 source files or files ripped from DVD's that have audio encoded as MPG can also have this problem although not obvious.

  6. Yeah..I can make it uncompressed audio...but I have a 20 gb player and want to fit as many videos as possible on this thing. I wish it played MPEG, otherwise, the Archos av400 is the geek gadget of the century.
