my Pioneer DV 333 won't play DVD-/+R. any ideas?

hi. i'm brand new to burning DVDs. i chose this DVD player after reading almost everything from this site back in 2000 because i planned to play mostly VCDs and DVD-Rs. i've received one burned DVD (not sure if it's +/-) in the mail as part of a trade and it plays fine, however the DVDs i've burned myself will not play. i use Nero and i'm not sure if maybe there's a setting i can select next time i burn to make the DVDs play in my Pioneer. i've tried the region hack from this site for my player but it doesn't work as described on the site. i have used HP and Pioneer blanks to no avail. i also use a Pioneer 4x burner.

i've searched in the forums here and haven't seen anyone else complaining that this Pioneer model has ever had a problem playing DVD-Rs of any brand so im really clueless as to what my next step should be. thanks in advance for any help and i'll be eagerly waiting for some...

The region hack has nothing to do with it -- it allows you to play DVDs from other regions (Europe, Asia, etc.), which are coded with a certain code that DVD players will check for (because the media companies like to be able to control releases).

You can't even burn a region-protected DVD with a consumer DVD burner.

This is highly likely -- the cheaper the player, the more likely it will play. In general, cheap no-name brands like Apex and Malata provide far more features than a $600 Sony player.

The page for this player indicates there should be no problem -- you are likely burning it wrong. Nero can be particularly problematic with DVD-Video. Try another program or the following:

In Nero, you must select the "DVD-Video" type. If that does not work, select DVD UDF/ISO and specify (it is on one of the tabs..) UDF 1.02 and 'Force DVD-Video Compatibility'.

This player, the DV-333 and DV-334, is the worst piece of trash ever made for playing DVDs. It chokes for many reasons.

thanks for the help, iantri. i tried burning again using the UDF/ISO to no avail-that disc won't play in either player. i guess i'll start looking for another burning program. i'm surprised since a lot of people have endorsed Nero. i guess it works on their players...

if anything like the 343 , one day (when i had some) they would not play burned disks at all ////

i just wanted to update anyone who might find this in the archives and those who've helped me (thank you) by letting you know that i CAN now play my DVD-Rs in my 333. i just realized that the first 2 DVDs i burned that would not play were in PAL format. i never even checked the subsequent 4 DVDs that i burned in my 333 because i assumed everything i burned was NTSC and wouldn't work either so i just watched them in another player. finally i tested everything i burned in the 333 just to make sure that it wouldn't play anything i'd burned and all the NTSC DVDs played. needless to say, i am happy and a little embarassed...

BUT... why won't the Pioneer DV-333 play PAL format DVDs? i was under the assumption that it was a region-free player. is it possible that it just doesn't play PAL DVD-/+R?

Not all players support it. I don't know the specs of your player and I'm to lazy now to check right now. But your's probobly does'nt. Pal is a european format if I'm not mistaken. Some players do support conversion on the fly. My guess is yours does not.
