  1. Whenever I attempt to update windows xp using the Windows Update link the web page opens then closes with the message Internet Explorer has encountered an error and needs to reclose - send report yes/no.

Is there another way of getting windows updates ? Apart from the request a CD shit from microsoft.

  2. Yes, you can download the updates for running later on you machine.

Turn on the Update Catalog and you can download these updates to a flash, zip, cd or harddrive for later installing.

    Give it a shot.

  4. Go to windows update site
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

    Select personalize windows update

Check off "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog"

    Click Save Settings

Then, in left bar you will see Windows Update Catalog that allows file by file downloading.

I would be concerned about why your getting that error, possibly a virus? Maybe causing IE to crash so you can't get the updates. There's really no valid reason why you shouldn't be able to update. I'd click on the send error, you can find out why your getting the error by doing that in some cases.

I'm thinking virus too - I am pretty sure I have had this problem before but cannot remember for sure. I did a quick google yesterday but nothing found. I have avg installed but that hasn't found anything, may try stoping programs from Task Manager later and see if there is anything there that shouldn't be.

Have you ran a spyware program such as Adaware or Spybot. Virus programs sometimes don't pick up the trojans like the spyware programs. There both free, can't hurt to try. Make sure you update both before running them.

I have spybot but it isn't installed as I've just installed xp yesterday but I like to do the updates asap. I'll try spybot tonight and also the Task Manager shutdown too.

Well if you just installed it yesterday I'd start over, then you can be absolutley positive that your clean. Did you have a firewall running when you went on the net? If not your most likley infected. I saw a unprotected machine get infected in less than 15 minutes and that was on dial up. XP is full of security holes without the updates you need to mereley connect without the a firewall and the updates to get infected.

If you don't have one download Zonealarm, put it on disc. Install XP, install the firewall and any anti-viru before connecting to internet. Immediatley get all the microsoft updates.

Seems to have been some wacky virus I think - bastards

Anyway following a quick format the damm thing wouldn't install an OS ! Kept getting a BSOD at exactly the same point during the install of XP and a borrowed copy of 2K stopped during the bootup disc sequence. Turned out to be my bloody IDE controller card After taking that out it installed fine.

They proliferate easy, you probably infected a few computers.... :P No shit I'm not kidding. Just keeps going from one comp to the next, did you notice if your internet connection seemed slow? The one I saw get infected was on a dial up and the connection went to a dead crawl, it was useless.

Anyhow when your doing the install it asks you if you want to install any drivers for scsi, raid etc. That might be why it was hanging, just a suggestion I'm not positive. When they find those people they ought to hang them by their toes in a pool of water right above their neck.
