  1. Hello,

I'm trying to convert a couple of VHS tapes to DVD for my girlfriend's father. I have the capturing using my ADVC-100, editing with Virtual Dub, and fixing the audio with Audacity, so I am ready to encode now.

However, I'm a little confused as to what settings I should use, since I've only done this with Laserdiscs. The VHS footage is about 4 hours long, so I'm going to split it up between two DVD's. Should I use half D1 resolution? The files were captured at 720x480 because that is all that WinDV will let me capture at?

Also, I'm not sure what I should set the Environment Settings to under the Canopus DV Codec setting. Currently I have all 3 boxes checked. Under the last option that says "Set equation for color space", I have Basic YCbCr (Default) chosen from the dropdown list. Is this the correct one to use? The other two items in the dropdown list are CCIR-601 (DV Standard) and YUV. I also have Output YUV data as Basic YCbCr not CCIR-601 checked under the Quantsize Matrix tab. Is that correct since I'm converting VHS?

    I really appreciate the help.

    Thanks.

Whenever I capture VHS I use VCD resolution (320x240). Gives much better results than the higher 352x480, at least for me. Plus, you can fit lots more VCD footage on a DVD-R without having to convert it, as it's part of the DVD specs.

@Forum Troll: You touched my Tra la la...

@Mythos2002: Do as you do always. Don't change anything at the proccess. It is DV what your PC now has.

  4. Thanks for the information. I can only capture at 720x480 though.

    SatStorm:

I tried to convert it to 352x480 in TMPGEnc Plus, but it look squished no matter what Video Arrange Method I used. So, should I just leave the resolution alone? This is the first time I've dealt with VHS, so I'm pretty much lost when it comes to downconerting the resolution. I've read where others have done it, but they didn't say how.

I think I've worked out the Canopus Codec in TMPGEnc settings though.

    Thanks.

Use input / output 4:3 with keep aspect ration (2)

352 x 480/576 look squished on your PC probably because of a codec conflict or because you have set to player to play 1:1 your sources, without correcting the aspect (something that the DVD standalones do automatic)
    Try classic media player

  6. Thanks for the information. A good friend told me that DV's native format is 720x480, so I'll probably leave it at that resolution.

    Thanks.
