I am a subscriber for one of those 20 bucks a month rent CD by mail schemes.

Trouble is that my Sony DRU510a doesnt seem to want to ready any of the CDs. They work fine in DVD player and laptop DVD ROM drive.

Is this some sort of copy protection technique? Annoying since I am trying to set up a PC as part of a home theatre solution.

Anyone else found this? I am thinking of buying a DRU700 and am now wondering if it will have the same problem.

No its only some prerecorded DVDs that wont read. DVDs I burn and others from the shop are ok.

In particular it seems to be the ones from the rental service that it wont read.

I was just wondering if anyone had heard of some lame scheme to try and prevent copying by somehow stopping reading by burners (I say lame because its obviously easy to get around and only serves to annoy those legitimately trying to watch a paid for movie).

I have Netflix and have had no problem ripping a pre-recorded DVD...right before I subsequently delete it. No clue about Wal-Mart or anyone else's DVD-rental-by-mail service.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

  6. I had the same problem.

Two of my DVDs (Family Business and another title) couldn't be read by DVD burner. I kept getting "Please insert a disc into drive D:\". The discs are brand new and the DVD players I've tested read them with no problem. When I get another DVD burner/drive, I'll test them again to see if they play or not.

  7. I have similiar problems with my TDK External Burner. I could burn a movie on a -R or -RW and then try to read it on same burner... no go... but it would play just fine on a set top or DVD ROM in same machine.

I chalked it to one of Murphy's Law's

I don't think they're talking about burns. Sounds like they mean the originals.
