8.5gb of what? Movie files? Data?
Assuming movie files, need to shrink to 4.37gb using dvd shrink, clonedvd or similar programs there are lots to choose from.
Read a guide, they do help -
Bit more detail would have got the answers you need without confusion :
How do I burn 8.5GB onto a DVD
How do I fit 8.5GB on a DVD
etc, etc
But, if you want to fit 8.5GB of video onto a DVD, assuming its ripped first, simply use any transcode software
DVDShrink is free and well used and supported
Nero Recode 2 is basically an improved commercial DVDShrink
DVD2One is very fast and pretty cheap to buy
Intervideo DVD Copy 2 produces very good results -
I don't know if you're talking about a simple DVD-R or a DVD+R DL, in that case you may want to check my thread: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=227931

BY MAGIC.
The DVD gremlins come out at night, and coat all DVD's with special "DVD Dust".
This DVD Dust enables you to use your pixie magic on the DVD's, and put 8.5GB of data on them!
All you have to do is put on your ruby slippers, click your heels together, and say:
"There's no place like home! I believe in fairies!"
And then the blue fairy will make you into a REAL boy, and you can save your father from the belly of the whale!
