I'm mystified. I got a 300 DVD jukebox player on eBay
(for cheap) and I'm busy loading it.
This thing shows a list of DVDs on the TV screen.
I noticed that Real store bought DVDs automatically put
their name and a thumbnail on the DVD list but my backups do not.
You have to enter the name manually on those.

I looked all over the DVD for this data , and can't find it. Anybody
know where it is ? I want to start putting it on the backups.

I also have one backup that a friend of mine made , and it also
knows it's own name , so it can be written .
... unless he gave me the original instead of the copy. I have to check.
    it has a label

  2. Your player is probably using the volume label on the disc. I believe this info is stored in the control area of the disc so isn't visible as a separate file.

The solution is simple: when you write a disc give it a volume name. In Nero, for example, use the Volume Name field under the Label tab in New Compilation. It works for me.

The thumnail is specific to the movie, like what would be seen on the DVD cover? Its not just a generic one? If so it'd have to be using the jacket picture. Not all DVDs have this, and its extremely easy to add this to your backups yourself. There is a guide for it on this site.

Its not the volume label. It's different from what displays in the list.
The list display is also about 32 characters. I think that's too
    big for the vol label.
Mv burning prog. puts the date there by default. That
doesn't show up on the list.

  5. It could be DVD Text - especially if the changer is a Sony, which, for some reason, seems to be the only company who implement this feature on a wide scale.

DVD Text is easy enough to add to your own discs, it's just adding some data to the exisiting IFO's and adjusting a few offsets.

Whats required is Dvd_Text. Volume labels have nothing to do with it on dvd jukeboxes. TitleWriter1.6 will allow you to add dvd_text to dvd also a simple generic menu on reauthored (Dvdshrink) files for navigation of chapters and multiple titlesets

    http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37608

Fyi Dvd_text is only added on about 10-15% of commercial dvds and the above guide is very old.

oh right, didn't realise it had to be player supported - currently got a sony ns930 and before that was a sony s336, so.....
we also don't get the jukeboxes over here, most i've seen is a 5 disc changer.

    Correct.

The link I provided may be old, but it still works - it's a pretty good guide or you can use the utility a subsequent poster suggested.

I have seen a small number of discs with a jacket picture, again, it was a Sony owned company who produced it !

The last one I recall seeing was the region 1 version of Spiderman in the funky boxset with the comics, movie cell etc. Don't forget that if your player supports it. the jacket picture is usually toggled by the menu of the player - no doubt some manufacturers would rather you see their logo than a still of the film, so don't expect it to be the default.

Why not try editing the text on a disc you've already authored and see how it goes ? Got to be worth the cost of a blank / rewritable to prove a point, I'd say.

I looked at HarryPotter and it had a Jacket Folder with
three single frame MPEG files in it. Same picture as the thumbnail
    on the File List.
I may be wrong about the other movie. The player can assign
a Genre or type to the movie. I may have done that while
screwing around. That may have been what was in the
    thumbnail for that one.

So all I have to do is put the title in the DVD_Text and make a single
frame MPEG file for the picture. Do I know how to do that ?
    Maybe.

Time for an experiment with a RW

Fyi FOO Titlewriter Utility can fill in second line of text (most use it for genre) for your dvd player. Just click on Volume. Second entry created > alter the text.

Jacket_p thumbnails are no fun to make - I believe your player can capture and save in memory any frame as the dvd is playing. Of course if the memory goes out all is lost, including dvd_text that you hand enter into player. I have a Pioneer jukebox - after 4 or 5 memory resets I created titlewriter so I could quickly add text to the dvd itself just prior to burning still have about 150 dvd's without text.

Tmpgenc surprised me. I didn't know it did pictures.
I frameserved 1 frame from vdub in Tmpgnec. It made a nice
    single I frame MPG.
Then before I read BJs post I loaded a jpeg into it. It also
    made a nice 1 frame MPG .
You learn something every day. Then if you don't use it for a year
(a month in my case) you need to learn it again.

    Harry potter had 3 pictures
    720 x 480
    176 x 112
    96 x 64
I just have to see which one the Sony likes

Why is the file extension on the DVD Mpeg stills MP2 ?
