I am trying to rip an old (~60's) DVD as per usual to an MP4. I have got an issue with audio sync that nothing seems to cure it![]()
I have spent an extensive amount of time evaluating different software for DVD ripping and video conversion. These include but are not limited to the following:
Handbrake
TMPGEnc
Any Video Converter
Nero Recode
MeGUI
After hundreds of trial and error experiments, I came to the conclusion that Nero Recode 3 does best suit my needs (Please feel free to suggest different tools but let's not convert this to "Best Video Converter" thread). The various tests I have carried out prove that Nero Recode 3 gives me a superb quality with minimum user effort. The latter is very important to me since I encode (and will be) several movies a day from a vast collection.
My methodology is as follows:
1. Rip DVD with DVDFab onto my hard disk in DVD native format (i.e. IFO and VOB files)
2. Convert the DVD from my hard disk to an MP4 (x264/H264 2Mbps CBR video and AAC Stereo 128kbps audio)
This usually works great! However, I've had loads of trouble with this old collection of movies. Around 40% of the final MP4 files are out of sync (audio vs video). I have tried all other tools mentioned above with no luck in fixing this! Any Video Converter has got a brilliant feature, which lets you choose a custom Audio sync factor using a slider that slides from value 0 to 60. Unfortunately, this fails miserably too![]()
Can anyone please help? Any constructive feedback on my methodology would be appreciated too.

I assume you have tried played those dvds to see that they are in sync before converting.
Be sure to opening the video_ts folder or ifo in the converters. Don't open/load VOB files.
Maybe try another ripper like dvddecrypter(works fine on older dvds) or anydvd and see if it make any difference. -
That's a very good point
Being an engineer, my mind always complicates things..!! 40% of the original DVDs are actually out of sync!! I guess this is bad mastering and cannot be rectified
It's always a good idea to compare the result with the original source
