  1. hi, during the last few days i have been trying to convert a divx avi file to mp4 for my ipod, i have divx installed on my pc and i am using two programs which are "xilisoft mp4 converter 3" and "ultra mp4 video converter" i used "gspot" to find out the information in the divx avi file and i found out that the audio is vbr and the video frame rate is 29.97 and when i go to convert the video i put the settings to 29.97 and audio to 128 at 44100 and the audio in the output mp4 file is ahead by like 3 seconds roughly and its not like it goes out gratualy it is out of sync from the start and it doesnt matter if i encode it to h.264 or just the normal mpeg4 it still comes out the same result. i have tried changing the frame rate of the conversion to 23.976 instead of the origanal 29.97 and it still is out of sync. please help this is really annoying me

    thanks in advance

Try Nandub , supports vbr better than vdub .

Set audio to full processing .
    Save as wav

    Close nandub , open vdub

Set video to direct stream copy .
Audio to full processing > then select wav .

You could recompress audio , but check out preview mode first .
If audio is out by constant value > audio > interleaving .
Adjust audio scew value to shift audio forward or backward .

Whole value moves audio further along , behind video .
negative value moves audio toward the front , ahead of video .

Save as new avi and play it back in any other player to confirm audio alignment .

  5. yeh bjs i will try that because with videora it still came out like with the audio 3 seconds ahead and that was with the profile h.264 qvga 512kbps 128/stereo

The original will play as intended using vbr audio ... thats not really the problem ...

Vbr is like taking an audio stream and slicing quiet area's out because compressing those serve no real purpose .

Or a professional bricklayer with out arms ... not so handy ... but can still be a foreman .

If audio was saved as mentioned before , and then you changed audio to "wav" and selected the new one , which is now cbr in format , try nandub in preview mode for a minute ... not any longer .

If in sync , save as new avi (just the first minute would suffice as test file)

If audio after conversion still has issue , I would think maybe audio which is aligned with any form of preload or scew value if used , might be a sticking point with some of these programs .

You could add 3 seconds of null audio to the wav file start , and 2 onto the end using audacity , then realign in vdub , preview test but disable audio preload first (it'll behave better without that) , set start and end frames locked when close enough , and resave as avi ... the audio would then be complete from start to finish .

Basically its like cut and shut work .

The conversion product may behave better with this source as both video and audio start from the same points within the avi .

I grabbed the tool and will run a test or two with vbr source .

    ----

An easier way to get around vbr audio is to use audacity to record from pc speaker aux , while its being played back .
This wav replaces the audio back in nandub or vdub ... junk the vbr .
Realign audio , and save as avi ... not to forget to set start frame and end frame or it wont work as expected .

Done ... vbr gone and shouldn't pose an issue to convert over later .
