  1. I was wondering, is there a difference (as far as dvd backup quality) between using "file mode" vs. "iso mode" to rip in dvd decryptor? This is for a dvd-5 to dvd-r backup. Do both methods offer an exact copy?

I dont think that any method gives an EXACT copy but from what l have read/seen the iso mode gives the closest match, btw if you rip with dd is best to use iso mode as dd will then burn the iso, dd wont burn files.

For a DVD-R to DVD-R you should use ISO Read then ISO Write to burn it to a disc.
All you are doing is taking the information off 1 disc and writing it to another. Quality is not a factor. It will be an exact copy.

  4. I don't use DD to burn, I use Nero for burning. I've done about 8 backups using the "file mode" option (Since Nero allows a Video_TS burn), so I'm just wondering if I'm getting an exact copy using this method.

If not, I'll switch to ISO mode.

It should be the same thing if you rip the VTS's. It's just more streamlined if you use the ISO function.

    There's your answer.

  7. Got it.

Guess my other question is really, are my other dvd's created from "file mode" compromised in quality?

No, all you're doing is ripping the vob files in file mode. there is no quality that is compromised compared to if you ripped the dvd-5 (single layer) in iso image. No quality is lost in either way because all your doing is copying the files off the original dvd. if you were ripping the vob files and converting to avi then to mpeg using a video encoder then yes the quality could change. hope you understand.

  9. Yes I do. That makes since, as I was not sure if dvd decryptor had some kind of built in recompression (ie. DVDShrink).

Thank you very much for the clarification.
