Use virtualdub to separate the audio and video and convert audio to .wav

If you don't know how to do this, open the avi with Virtualdub, go to the video menu and select direct stream copy, go to the audio menu and select full processing mode, then go to file and save as avi. The new avi will be about double the size of the original avi but will have uncompressed wav audio.
